The Convention People’s Party (CPP) on Good Friday called on Ghanaians, especially Christians, to use the occasion of Easter as a period for meditation on their individual and collective contributions to the family and society while working towards uniting the country.

In a commemorative message to the nation copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, and signed by the National Chairman, Professor Edmund N. Delle, admonished all to seek God’s guidance in honesty and offer an unpretentious prayer of supplication during the festive period.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LVYMOlChxRIClHC44dgLE4LUOwqYykOm”]He also tasked religious leaders to offer good counselling to political leaders, adding that “you should guide and direct us. We are working together for mankind both spiritually and physically, support us with godly counsel.

“As a nation, we need to move away from practices that threaten to destroy our values of truth and integrity,” stressing that Christ endured suffering for mankind which was very significant during this period and challenged Christians to recognize it during this Easter season.

“Let us show love and friendship to our neighbours, our communities and the disadvantaged. Many of us have spent the last month in a period of fasting, prayer and sober reflection and on Easter Day we will feast and make merry in remembrance of the resurrection of Christ,” Prof Delle stated.

“The CPP extends a hand of warmth to Ghanaians and all peoples of the world as we celebrate a significant period on the Christian calendar.

“We enjoin all celebrants, especially the youth to celebrate in circumspection and moderation to prevent any unfortunate incidents,” he said.

The CPP also called on the motoring public to be extra careful on the road as they drive around,  and to “not rush for money. Lives are precious so drivers kindly take precautions on the road.

“Passengers must also not put pressure on the drives to speed-up, we must all work to eliminate the human tendencies that causes road accidents”.

Professor Edmund Nminyem Delle, the National Chairman of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), says the party’s newly launched biometric membership Identification Cards, will help solve the party’s single digit votes syndrome at polling stations during national elections.

He said quite often than not, the number of registered party members the CPP have, does not show up to vote during national elections, thereby making the party record single digits at some polling stations.

Professor Delle said this at the official launch and registration of CPP biometric membership ID cards on Friday at the party Headquarters, in Accra.

[contextly_sidebar id=”w161r8gKKwh1PZbViUPt4VTLHXei6jC4″]He said the launch of the membership biometric cards was the first of many steps the CPP was taking to revive the party formed by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to its glorious status.

He said even though the CPP was behind on the list of political parties to undergo the biometric membership card registration process, the idea was the first on the party priority list discussed at its National Congress held in 2017.

While making a rallying call to party members to register, Professor Delle said the biometric cards would not only ensure the membership status of registered members, but would also ensure that members are powered to contest for party positions at the branch, constituency, regional and national levels.

He expressed appreciation to the national executives’ committee for taking the decision to expedite action on the registration exercise and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for their financial support.

The cards are in categories of Platinum, which would cost GH¢1,000 and above, the Diamond GH¢750, Gold GH¢500, Silver GH¢300, Bronze GH¢200 and the Ordinary GH¢5 and above.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has embarked on a massive campaign with the aim of registering more electorate into the party to break the strongholds of all political parties in the Upper West Region (UWR).

The campaign began after a follow-up to their Central Steering Committee meeting held in Accra recently.

In an interview with the UWR Branch Secretary of the CPP, Mr Issahaque Sulemana, he said they were starting early with new strategies being mapped out to ensure that they got a foothold and won more parliamentary seats in the region.

Distribution of nomination forms

As a first step, he said, the regional executive had started with the distribution of nomination forms for the registration of new members at the polling stations, as well as the constituencies during which their curriculum vitae would be kept in a database to enable them to know their strength before conducting fresh elections.

“Since the December 7, 2008 general election that the CPP won a seat, the party has not been able to capture any seat in Parliament again, thereby partly weakening our capacity to deliver on its responsibilities,” he said.

“Election to Parliament is on a competitive basis with the participation of political parties and independent candidates who meet the requirements set by the Constitution and other relevant laws governing elections in the country,” he stated.

The regional secretary explained that with this development the party would organise symposiums and talks with the aim of improving citizens’ understanding of the values and the manifesto of the party throughout the region. To make them committed to the CPP, the secretary said, they would be tasked to pay dues to run their local affairs at the grass-roots and constituency levels.

Creation of jobs

Mr Sulemana noted that the CPP was the only party that could take pragmatic steps to create jobs for all thereby creating wealth and change the fortunes of the country, noting that both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had failed the people over the years.

He reminded the people that most of the social amenities and infrastructural facilities being enjoyed now were provided by the CPP making it the only party that could solve the country’s problems.

“We are, therefore, calling on Ghanaians to give the party a chance to work to bring unity and prosperity into the country since they have tried the two dominant parties over the years and they are dissatisfied with them,” he said.

On their priorities when given the chance, he mentioned creation of more jobs for all, roads, health and education, since to the party, every child had the right to free education up to the senior high school level.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has charged Ghanaians not to give up in their quest in saving the country from injustice, corruption and political victimization.

The party in a press statement signed by its Chairman, Prof. Edmund Delle to mark the country’s 57th Republic Day anniversary further commended Ghanaians for protecting the sovereignty of the country over the years.

[contextly_sidebar id=”3jZlGehhGmWvRILl52JojoB471LCn5kD”]“The CPP congratulates the Nation of Ghana for protecting its sovereignty over the past 57 years and still counting. We must continue to work together to protect the State and fight against injustice, corruption and political victimization. Ghana must work again,” the statement added.

Ghana attained a republican status some 57 years ago which marked an event of profound historical and political significance.

The feat implied that Ghana had the freedom to draw its own constitution and elect a president, who, with the cabinet, could initiate programmes for the well-being of the people.

Since then, the country has been managed by both civilians and military rulers.

The CPP which Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah formed, in the statement noted that “Ghana’s victory in attaining full republican status went along with claiming the full sovereignty over all aspects of ournational and international life.”

“Ghana on July 1, 1960 totally weaned itself from British colonial rule, as the Queen of England’s Governor General left the shores of the country to signify that the Black Star of Arica had taken charge of its own affairs…The CPP recounted that after becoming the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence on March 6, 1957, Ghana’s political freedom inspired the liberation of many other African countries from colonial governance,” the statement added.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is positioning itself to become the alternative viable political party to replace the duo-politics of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the dominant opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to the party, this has become imperative because many voters have come to realise that both the NPP and the NDC offer the same mediocre performance in government.

Capitalism vs Socialism

“The NDC professes to be a social democratic party but when in power practises capitalism while the NPP which is a capitalist party practises socialism, thereby confusing Ghanaians with their scheme of operations,” the First Vice Chairperson of CPP, Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim, told the Daily Graphic in an interview.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of a Biometric and Membership Drive Centre to facilitate the registration of both old and new members of the CPP last week, Hajia Ibrahim said the party (as part of its activities to capture power in 2020) had put in place a number of activities to achieve its aims.

She said men and women from other Nkrumaist parties were joining the mother party — the CPP — to make it greater and stronger.

Hajia Ibrahim said people had realised that the CPP was the only Nkrumaist party that could offer such a leadership that could help capture power from the two dominant political forces in the country.

Party is refocusing

The First Vice Chairperson of the CPP said the party was refocusing on the Ghanaian environment and would ensure that foreign nationals were banned from engaging in illegal mining.

She stated that Ghanaians would rather be assisted to take control of the economy of the country.

She cited the case of the degradation of the environment by foreign nationals, with Ghanaians fronting them.

Foreign companies

She said the aim of foreign companies was to make profit, so they cared little about the environment, hence the indiscriminate destruction of the environment by foreign nationals.

As President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration nears the 100-day mark, some of Ghana’s major political parties have cited violent attacks by some pro-government vigilante groups as its major failing.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for one, noted that levels of lawlessness in the country escalated in the few months of President Akufo-Addo’s governance.

A deputy General of the NDC, Koku Anyidoho, noted that President Akufo-Addo assumed office with a lot of goodwill but added that “I can say with a lot of certainty that he has lost a lot of that goodwill.”

Koku Anyidoho
Koku Anyidoho

In his view, the disappointment is quite obvious, given the “gross lawlessness, brigandry, hooliganism, show of weakness, incompetence and his inability to stop the hoodlums of his side [the New Patriotic Party].”

“He speaks at the State of the Nation address and assures us that the hooliganism will end, he tells us that the police have the authority to operate, but the hooliganism just escalates,” Koku Anyidoho stated in a Citi News interview.

Akufo-Addo has failed to deal with vigilante groups

Also speaking to Citi News, the People’s National Convention (PNC), held the view that the actions of these vigilante groups affiliated with the ruling party have been a bane to the president’s quest to rally Ghanaians behind his developmental agenda.

“The famous vigilante group menace is something that this administration has failed woefully to deal with,” the General Secretary of the PNC, Atik Mohammed noted.

Atik Mohammed

He however lauded President Akufo-Addo for being able to constitute his government and complete the appointment of his ministers within his first hundred days, though he opined that the Akufo-Addo administration has “betrayed its promise [of a lean government] and decided to go for a rather bloated government.”

Nana Addo must show leadership

In the Convention People’s Party’s (CPP) view, the size of the Akufo-Addo government did not matter as long as it translated to results.

“As a political Party, we argued that the numbers didn’t really matter. The most important thing is that the goods should be delivered to the benefit of the Ghanaian people,” Kadir Abdul Rauf, the Director of Communications for CPP stated.

He however said it has not been rosy for the Akufo-Addo government which “hasn’t done much or achieved something that stands out for us to talk about.”

“There are seeming levels of insecurity in the country given the activities of the vigilante groups trying to take our laws into their own hands, which is very disturbing, and has no historical precedent in our country. We want to call on our President to show leadership by ensuring that those people coil back into their shells.”

Dismissed acting General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Eric Asani Tano, has launched a scathing attack on the party’s leadership; saying they have rendered the party politically non-viable.

According to him, the party has lost so much credibility such that, it would be surprising for it to qualify for the 2020 general elections.

[contextly_sidebar id=”aF7F4TWZNBTUvVsOlsKOLuwMkaxEjHKJ”]The membership of Eric Tano was revoked by the party’s Central Committee on grounds that he did not vote for the party’s Presidential candidate, Ivor Greenstreet in the 2016 elections.

He also allegedly accused the chairman of the party, Prof. Edmund Delle, of bribing some leaders of the party to victimize persons who speak against wrongdoings within the party.

“What makes the CPP’s issue very stinky is the fact that, those who are not following the constitution and those who have been bought; most of the regional chairmen and the Central Committee members have been bought by Prof. Delle and so they are going all out to as it were expel or humiliate people who are standing for the truth,” he said.

He added that, “As it stands now, under the leadership of Prof. Delle, there is no Convention People’s Party. It is a collapsed party. We have been ridiculed. The chairman’s action since he came into office by suspending and sacking people who have toiled for the party since 2008, so they are trying to push out well meaning people out of the party and then run their own show through corrupt practices. The evidence is clear. They should go and print the party’s account as to whether all the monies used for the campaign. In 2020, if the Electoral Commission certifies this particular party to contest, I’ll be very shocked.”

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), has in the last few decades failed to make significant impact on Ghana’s political terrain following the death of its founder and first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The party’s performance in the last two elections have been abysmal with many blaming its chairman and 2016 flagbearer, Dr. Kobina Ivor Greenstreet for the outcome, having allegedly done the bidding of a bigger political party.

But a member of the party, James Kwabena Bomfeh, denied the claims, saying the party is still a formidable political force.

Meanwhile, the party is considering a proposal for merger with the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), which was founded by Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom; a break-away member of the party and former flagbearer, with the hope of boosting its chances in subsequent elections.

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has called on the Ghana Police Service to stop pampering groups masquerading as political party affiliates and causing troubles.

Professor Edmund N. Delle, CPP Chairman, expressed disgust with the attitude of the pro-New Patriotic Party groups known as “Delta Forces and Invincible Forces,” saying “they are a time-bomb, we must detonate them immediately.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”3xEXqvqLGl8DaK6zR66lnUvjRwjuVAlR”]The CPP Leader in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on the posturing of the “riotous delta forces” in Kumasi recently, noted that “the Police must deal authoritatively with all rebellious groups and protect citizens from further attacks.

“If we fail to decisively deal with the emerging rebellious groups, very soon they will entrench themselves and become alternative forces to the national security apparatus”.

The CPP Chairman also called on the leadership of the NPP to internally institute measures to manage the groups saying “as a governing party, you are responsible for the image of the country both locally and internationally.

“But unfortunately such riotous behaviour from groups and individuals closely associated with the party is unhealthy for the building of multi-party democracy in the country”.

He cautioned the NPP leadership that the two rebellious groups are gradually becoming monsters which will not only destroy the party but the nation at large.

Members of a rebellious group ‘Delta Force,’ stormed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council last Friday, March 24, in an attempt to stop one Mr George Adjei, appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the Regional Security Coordinator from working.

It took the timely intervention of the police to save the situation and restore law and order.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), has on the advice of its Central Committee, revoked the membership of its acting General Secretary, Eric Asani Tano.

The acting General Secretary is said to have campaigned and voted for a candidate other than the party’s candidate in the 2016 elections.

[contextly_sidebar id=”4Yoi4sgbnbMDSncOeDV6uXQTiP99dHdo”]The Party last year suspended its National Youth Organizer and General Secretary, and made Asani Tano Acting General Secretary.

A member of the Party’s Central Committee and Campaign Strategist in the last elections, Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, told Citi News the action against Mr Asani Tano was taken based on his own plea.

He said, “It is about the party invoking a clause in the constitution in recognition of a decision he had made by ceasing his membership of the party by going public to say he voted for a candidate other than the candidate of the party, and also saying that he was advocating to his constituents to vote against the decision of the congress which is the highest body of the party.”

He added that “so per his own actions and his own utterances and act, per Article 17 Clause 24 , he ceases to be a member. He appeared before the central committee and agreed to the issues that had been raised. He confirmed them.”

Following the 2016 general elections and the subsequent declaration of the winner, not much has been heard from the CPP after it failed to make a significant impact in the elections.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP), polled just about 0.24% of total valid votes cast. Mr. Bomfeh said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have in the last two decades in power failed to make Ghana a better place.

But in a separate interview, Mr. Bomfeh said in spite of the defeat, the party is still a formidable political force although he admitted that the party is experiencing some internal issues.

“The CPP has a responsibility. We cannot afford to continue to make ourselves a laughing stock. This is a giant party with potential energy. So phenomenal that all we need is to get our acts right, it doesn’t matter the differences we share because we are all human beings,” he said

The National Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Professor Edmund Delle has vowed that the party will resist any attempt to rewrite the country’s history in a way that discredits Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s significant role in Ghana’s independence struggle.

He said people agitating over the consistent reference to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the founder of independent Ghana are only being selective with history.

[contextly_sidebar id=”e83lt9UlbUCCj3YO87JXWFtBF9nZR69K”]Prof. Delle’s comment comes against an earlier assertion by the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye that holding Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the founder of independent Ghana was wrong.

Speaking at the Institute of Economic Affairs’ (IEA) showing of a documentary of the political history of Ghana between 1844 and the Fourth Republican Constitution, Prof. Oquaye described as “palpable falsehood” claims at Nkrumah was the founding father of Ghana saying that the country must recognize other persons involved in the independence struggle and not hail only Nkrumah.

The comment revives the long-standing debate about the actual founder of  Ghana especially after the president, Nana Akufo-Addo subtly also suggested so in the address he delivered at Ghana’s 60th independence anniversary parade.

But according to the CPP chairman, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah led the charge for Ghana’s independence, and must not be denied the associated recognition.

Mike Oquaye
Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye

He told Citi News, “anything you can say against Nkrumah, you say it, but as long as Ghana lives and Africa lives, he will be greater and greater still.”

“We are not denying that being human, he had some faults but you have to see the situation that made him do these acts… I don’t deny that people contributed, so I am personally not against the fact of recognizing people who contributed. There is no doubt about that; J.B Danquah and the rest. They all contributed to it, but no matter how many contributed, you identify one person.”

He noted that his party will study the claims by persons attempting to rewrite the country’s history “and we will come out with our version on the matter.”

“It is their opinion, they want founders we have decided on founder; the greatest African that has ever lived.”
