A man has been hospitalized after a truck without a driver packed on a hilly road, crashed into his Range Rover on Tuesday evening in Kumasi.

The truck, which was carrying shea nuts, had been involved in an accident with a Toyota Corolla, and the drivers of the two cars were at a police station, when the second incident occurred around 10:30 pm.

It is suspected that the truck’s hand-break lost its grip causing it to go down the slope, and eventually crashing into the Range Rover at an intersection on the Anloga junction-KNUST road.

“Whilst the two of them were here making a formal report of the police, the truck started reversing with no driver in it. No control, so this Range Rover which was also travelling on the right end towards the KNUST end was directly behind it,” the Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, ACP Kwaku Buah told Citi News.

The driver tried to swerve towards the other side of the road but was unable to escape a collision.

“Thankfully, nobody has died from this accident but the driver of the Range Rover is injured and is on admission at the Kompf Anokye Teaching Hospital responding to treatment,” ACP Buah added.

He added that Police have begun investigations into the crash.

“What we have to do is to take this truck and the other accident vehicles to the testing officer to test and give us his expert advice. Thereafter, we will take the next step.”

The crash caused heavy vehicular traffic on the Anloga junction intersection, and police officers were busily directing motorists to ease the flow of traffic when Citi News visited the scene.

The Range Rover has since been towed to the Oforikrom Police Station.

Owners of the truck were also unloading the Shea nuts from the carrier before it can be towed.

Six people have been confirmed dead with some 39 others sustaining various degrees of injury after a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus traveling from Sunyani to Kumasi, collided  head-on with an Opel Taxi cab at Boaso, a farming community near Bechem in the Tano South District of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The Opel was being driven by 30-year-old Samuel Kojo Eshun, who was travelling from Bechem to Sunyani at about 7:00pm Wednesday night.

Confirming the incident to Citi News, the Tano South District Police Commander, Supt. Abraham Bansah, said the police got information about the crash and quickly moved to the scene with officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for rescue efforts.

He explained that the driver of the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus, in an attempt to avoid hitting a man who crossed the bus, lost control of the steering wheel, and veered into the lane of the taxi, resulting in a head-on collision, killing the man and all occupants of the taxi instantly.

He explained that the impact of the crash compelled the bus to drag the taxi cab into a valley making, the rescue process difficult, which compelled the GNFS to cut through the mangled vehicles to retrieve the trapped bodies.

Supt. Bansah said the bodies of the dead have been deposited at the Bechem Government Hospital awaiting autopsy.

He appealed to residents to report at the station for identification of the deceased as only one has been identified so far.

He said injured occupants of the MMT bus are receiving treatment at the Bechem Government Hospital, and the Duayaw-Nkwanta St. John of God Catholic Hospital.

He also lamented the wanton disregard for caution and road safety regulations by drivers and other road users, in the face of intensive public education activities by his outfit, and vowed to deal ruthlessly with offenders.

US tennis star Venus Williams has been involved in a car crash that led to the death of a 78-year-old man.

A spokesman for Palm Beach Gardens police in Florida confirmed to the BBC they were investigating a fatal crash involving the Grand Slam champion.

A man was taken to hospital after the accident on 9 June and died two weeks later from his injuries, he said.

According to TMZ, which broke the story, police believe she was at fault but her lawyer says it was an accident.

The man who died, Jerome Barson, was travelling with his wife who was driving their vehicle through an intersection when the collision happened.

Ms Williams’ car suddenly darted into their path and was unable to clear the junction in time due to traffic jams, according to witness statements in a police report obtained by US media.

Mrs Barson was also taken to hospital but survived.

“[Ms Williams] is at fault for violating the right of way of [the other driver],” the report said, adding that there were no other factors like drugs, alcohol or mobile phone distractions.

The 37-year-old, seven-time Grand Slam champion reportedly told police she did not see the couple’s car and she was driving slowly.

Ms Williams’ lawyer Malcolm Cunningham told CNN in a statement: “Ms Williams entered the intersection on a green light. The police report estimates that Ms Williams was travelling at 5mph when Mrs Barson crashed into her.

“Authorities did not issue Ms Williams with any citations or traffic violations. This is an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one.”

Next week, Ms Williams is due to play her 20th Wimbledon tournament in London, where she is seeded 10th.

Ms Williams and her sister Serena have dominated the women’s game for two decades.
