The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Central Regional on Thursday safely disposed of about four metric tonnes of expired products worth more than GH¢ 32,697 in Cape Coast.

They were made up of herbal medicines, alkaline water, and some expired drugs, which were voluntarily brought from pharmacies and hospitals to the FDA in accordance with the Public Health Act.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SArfAJvWDj6Mkf0KcNDtw0hYYP15ibNR”]The products were disposed off and burnt at the Nkanfoa dumping site in the presence of officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Public Health Division of Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly and the security agencies.

Mr John Odai-Tettey, Regional Head of the Authority in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the products were seized during its market surveillance, unannounced inspections and investigations into product complaints by people.

He said some of them were unregistered while others had expired.

The FDA, he said, was mandated to monitor the safety quality and efficacy of products on the market to ensure that the products met the requirement and conditions under which they were registered to guarantee consumer safety.

Mr Odai-Tettey said the FDA would not relent on its mandate of ensuring public safety by insisting that products met quality standards.

He advised consumers to critically read the labels on food items, check the expiry date, batch number and legibility of the manufacturers before patronising products.

Again, he reminded consumers to properly examine products to satisfy themselves of the quality and the expiry date before purchasing to avoid consuming expired products ahead of the Easter festivities.

Mr Odai-Tettey encouraged consumers to be bold to expose those dealing in such unwholesome goods by reporting to the FDA for prompt action.

Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the First Lady, on Saturday organised a free health screening exercise for more than 500 residents of Cape Coast and surrounding communities.

The beneficiaries were screened for HIV, blood pressure, hypertension, blood sugar level, diabetes, eye disorders, Hepatitis B, and malaria among other diseases.

The exercise was conducted by a team comprising medical doctors, laboratory technicians, physician assistants, dentists and nurses drawn from the Ghana Health Service.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ggMhLWmXcIYENcvTx9OTSFpJ6qwdOu1O”]Dr. Azuma Abdul-Tawab, the Coordinator of the Rebecca Health Outreach Programme, under the Rebecca Foundation, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that community health screening programmes were important exercises to enhance the health status of the people.

The ultimate goal of the Rebecca Foundation, he said, was to provide safe and proper healthcare services to the aged, children and other vulnerable groups in the communities to improve on their health and bring joy to them.

The medical outreach initiative of the Foundation has covered more than 2,000 people in the Central, Eastern and Greater Accra Regions.

Dr. Abdul-Tawab advised the public to visit the hospital regularly for routine checkups, eat balanced diets, exercise, drink more water and have enough rest and avoid self-medication.

The beneficiaries were educated on good eating habits and dangers of drug abuse and self medication by public health nurses.

They were also educated on HIV prevention, especially mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding.

The nurses appealed to the public to go for voluntary HIV testing, which is free, to help them know their status and receive the needed care and support.

Madame Philomena Baidoo, a 64-year old trader, commended the Foundation for the gesture, saying it will improve the healthcare needs of people in the area.

Students of The Academy of Christ the King Senior High School at Cape Coast in the Central Region, have demonstrated against encroachers who have allegedly taken over the school’s lands.

The students, who had wore red armbands on Tuesday, said they do not feel safe because they have received death threats from some of the encroachers.

“We are demonstrating because the school is not safe. Not long ago, a student was threatened by some community guys that if the headmistress does not stop protecting the school, they are going to kill the students”, one student demonstrator said.

The students thus want the encroachers to stop their activities that threaten the existence of the school and the lives of teachers and students.

Another student said, “Looking at the things happening in the school, we know that learning without a peaceful environment we can’t make it, so if we don’t speak for our right that the land is for us, people will take up the land”.

Government has awarded a contract for the construction of a twelve-unit classroom block on the school land, but the supposed violent encroachers have been frustrating the work of the of contractors.

The foreman at the site said, “three or four days ago, I started the profile and the people over here came and destroyed it; I did it again with police presence, but overnight they came and destroyed it again”.

The contractors have asked for security in order to continue with the project because they still fear for their lives as the threats from the local people continue.

Speaking to journalists, the Headmistress of the school, Madam Florence Siaw-Offei, lamented how the school land has reduced drastically from over 74 acres to less than 34 acres, while the school is actually occupying less than 20 acres due to encroachment.

She said the Central Regional Minister, Kwame Duncan, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ernest Arthur, and other authorities have been holding stakeholder meetings on the land saga, and some orders have been issued to the encroachers, but the threats continue.

The match on Sunday has no real significance as Egypt have already sealed a spot at the World Cup, but Appiah has said he’s using the game to assess his squad as he builds a competitive team for AFCON 2019.

The Minister of State In charge Of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, has said his outfit is ready to present the draft Bill that will legally convert Cape Coast and Tamale Polytechnics to fully fledged Universities to Parliament.

“As I am speaking now, a Bill is ready to be laid before Parliament when parliament resumes next week,” he said to Citi News.

[contextly_sidebar id=”cx6ERWlCBdIf9hZu2GPruTQa5Ut7ipAK”]”It is only a matter of time that Parliament will come in and then pass the Bill into law. So that not only will Tamale and Cape Coast be technical universities just by executive fiat or instrument, but also by law. So it is a matter of time” he noted.

“Before any university comes into being, it has to be backed by law. The government first upgraded the six polytechnics into technical universities. Cape Coast and Tamale were not part of it. But the institutions do not come into being until an act of Parliament passes them.”

The Cape Coast and Tamale Polytechnics initially did not meet the 16 point criteria laid down for qualification for conversion, which assessed the varying levels of infrastructure and capacity.

After missing out, the two institutions complained to government and accused it of masterminding to get them out of the conversion.

Prof. Yankah acknowledged their complaints saying, “from a distance, you will appreciate their concerns. It will sound as if,  yes we were all made polytechnics but it looks like you are demoting us, you are taking us back to a place we were long ago.”

The Director of Gender at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Comfort Asare, has reaffirmed the Ministry’s strategies targeted at minimising teenage pregnancy and early marriage in the Central Region.

The strategies include liaising with stakeholders in the fight against teenage pregnancy and child marriage, as tools for achieving Ghana’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by 2030.

gender-ministry-event-3

Speaking to Citi News at the ‘Mentorship and Girls Empowerment Summit 2017’ on Friday at Cape Coast, Dr Asare noted that, “We are bringing girls together to teach them to be assertive and to empower them to know that life depends on them, and if they want be successful in future, this is the time to start it”.

The 2017 Mentorship and Girls Summit at Cape Coast, was under the theme “The Road to 2030: Empowering the Girl Child for Sustainable Development of the Central Region.”

gender-ministry-event

The program saw over eighty girls selected from rural communities and schools in the Cape Coast Metropolis, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem and Mfantsiman Municipalities and the Assin South District in attendance.

The Central Region ranks second highest in adolescent pregnancy with 21.4% rate, with girls between the ages of fifteen and nineteen either getting pregnant or having their first child, the Department of Gender has revealed.

The four-day forum, among other things, educated the girls on sexual and reproductive health and rights, the causes, effects and prevention of adolescent pregnancy, sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) and child marriage.

Dr Comfort Asare
Dr Comfort Asare

In her keynote address, Dr Asare stated, “Statistics available indicates that among women between the ages of 25 and 49, 11 percent had their first sexual intercourse by age fifteen, 44 percent by age eighteen, and 68 percent by age twenty, whereas in the same age category of men, only five percent had their first sexual intercourse by age fifteen, 27 percent by age eighteen and 52 percent by age twenty”.

She described the figures as alarming, and that if the right strategies are not put in place to tackle the problems of girls, achieving the 2030 SGDs of ‘No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education and Gender Equality’ will be challenging.

Checks at the business and administrative hub of Cape Coast as well as the entire Mankessim town have shown that the two notable places in the Central Region have no fire hydrants.

This means that should any fire outbreak occur in those places, the Ghana National Fire Service personnel may struggle to put it out.

A fire hydrant is a water connection point, which is part of the water pipelines in an area, where firefighters use to fight an outbreak. Per international standards, there should be one at each hundred metre interval.

dav

However, in Cape Coast, from London Bridge, the Agriculture Development Bank area, to Kingsway, through the Ministries to GCB Bank Main and from Melcom to the National Investment Bank, a radius of about 300 metres, not a single fire hydrant can be seen.

The area also hosts the SSNIT House, MTN, GN Bank, Prudential Bank, Barclays Bank, and other notable  businesses.

The Acting Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Central Regional Ghana National Fire Service, Assistant Divisional Officer Abdul Wasiu Hudu, said, “it is a worrying situation, especially when there is a fire situation, it so difficult because you don’t have ready hydrants to which you can connect the hoses to so that you can have a constant flow of water to fight fire”.

dav

A business owner in the enclave, Samson Amuzu, told Citi News, “The situation is not only a threat to businesses but also to the people living around and those who come here to do their daily business”.

Officer Wasui Hudu again bemoaned the difficult for firefighter face in movimg from the Fire Station at the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly to the Kingsway area because the street is a single lane.

The Mankessim Situation

At Mankessim, the situation is dire, known to be the central business centre of the Mfantsiman Municipality, the town cannot boast of even a single fire hydrant.

The town, a fast growing one, hosts one of Central Region’s huge and vibrant markets while it has also become the hub of most businesses, banks and other financial institutions, but the nearest fire hydrant is at the only Fire Station within the Municipality at Abonko, several kilometres away.

The Regional PRO recounts the Mankessim situation saying, “There is no hydrant there, neither is there any open source of water, so most times when there is fire at Mankessim and they realise they have inadequate water, they call the Regional headquarters or Apam, which will also take about thirty minutes”.

He indicates his outfit has instituted a regular fire education at the market, and is also working together with the Ghana Water Company and the various assemblies to deal with the situations.

The District Grand Lodge of Cape Coast has organised a free health screening for the people of Cape Coast and its environs.

The exercise, which formed part of the third centenary anniversary celebration of the United Grand Lodge of England, was to help members to know their health status.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MVu3X2K3Y5Ug1Ma1NJ3nQvNYGNrw0yYB”]It was also part of an annual charity programme, where the lodge members identify a needy community or institution in their catchment area, and go to their aid.

The event coincided with the Oguaa Fetu Afehye.

Beneficiaries of the exercise were screened for hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, eye problem, stroke, malaria tests among others, and offered free medication as well as education on the importance of living healthy.

More than four hundred people benefited from the exercise.

The health screening exercise was conducted by a medical team comprising doctors and nurses drawn from the health facilities within the Cape Coast Metropolis.

Brother Perry Mensah, a Senior District Grand Warden, said the Lodge organised a cancer awareness lecture and a health walk to educate the members on how to avoid diseases.

He said the Freemasonry is a society that thrived on three core pillars of service to humanity, humility to society and fairness to all.

It is concerned with the less privileged in society.

He said the lodge believes that when people are healthy, that could engage in economic activities to meaningfully contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

The lodge considered the health of an individual as paramount, hence the delivery of an ultra modern mobile cancer scanner machine to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Brother Mensah said

President Akufo-Addo has called on Christians and all Ghanaians to seek God’s intervention in the affairs of government to help them work to the benefit of the country.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service on Sunday at the Wesley Methodist Cathedral in the Central Region after the New Patriotic Party’s delegates’ conference, Akufo-Addo expressed his commitment to ensuring development of the country.

“We have to remember at all times that we need the intervention of the lord on daily basis in our life so that He can give us wisdom, courage, health, and compassion so that we can do our work to the benefit of our people of Ghana,” he said.

He thanked the people in Region for their support to him and the party during the 2016 elections noting that the party took the decision to host the conference in Cape Coast in appreciation of their assistance in helping the party capture power at the 2016 polls.

“When the counting was over, we discovered that the Central Region, not only has established the fact that it was a barometer but has given us an extraordinary vote of confidence. From 7 seats, we went to 19 out of 23,” he said.

The 25th annual Delegates’ Conference was to afford the party the opportunity to take stock of their achievements over the past few years and strategize for the years ahead.

As part of events at the conference, some proposals including the expansion of their presidential electoral college were made.

Only 5,000 delegates are allowed to vote for national officers at the party’s congresses but the current proposal seeks to have the number increased to 150,000 to be at par with the number of delegates who vote for to choose a flagbearer at the party’s presidential primaries.

The conference has directed the National Council of the party to set up a Committee to look into all the proposals for constitutional amendments and present a report on the various proposals at a subsequent conference to be held before the end of the year.
