The building according to police, belongs to one Joyce Oppong Kwasi, 46, and was rented out to Akosua Serwaah, 35, at Kwadaso St. Peters.

The walls of the building fell and trapped three children when police proceeded to the scene, following a distress call at about 10:30pm on Saturday.

The two, Maame Serwaa, 10, and Kate Boakye, 7, were pronounced dead on arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Nina Boakye, 4, who was in a critical condition is on admission at the Kwadaso SDA Hospital.

It took the intervention of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service to recover the two bodies from the rubble.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the KATH morgue awaiting autopsy.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when the two were pounding fufu close to one side of the building.

An eyewitness who spoke to Citi News explained that it was not raining, neither was there a storm, but the mud house, popularly called ‘atakpame’, appeared to be very weak.

The eyewitness further stated that though the injured had been rushed to the St Francis Xavier Hospital at Assin Fosu, the body of the deceased, believed to be in her eighties, had been lying in the open for close to two hours after the incident.

According to him, the Assin Akropong police have been informed but were yet to come to the scene.

The incident occurred around 4:00pm on Saturday, after a downpour pulled down the 70-year old dilapidated school building.

Narrating the incident to Citi News, a resident, Williams Otibu, said “it was raining with heavy winds and all we saw was that the building collapsed. It hosts primary one to six, and it is A and B so the lower primary collapsed. School was not in session at the time, but there were five women seeking refuge under the structure and they got trapped under it but only sustained some bruises.”

The Nkrankan Presby primary school hosts over three hundred (300) pupils, and this is not the first time such an incident has occurred.

Mr. Otibu explains that, the “the school is about 70 years old and the upper primary facility was pulled down about thirty years ago due to the danger it posed to pupils then. This new structure was put up, but unfortunately that also grew weaker. After we complained several times, the school authorities said they will come and work on it till eventually everything went down.”

He added that “the school was not in session as the time the incident happened, but this means from Monday a session of the school (primary one to six) cannot operate because the pupils will have nowhere to sit.”

Meanwhile, another dilapidated building situated close to the collapsed building, has become a death trap, and residents fear it might also collapse if nothing is done about it.

All attempts to get the headteacher of the school to comment on the issue proved futile.

The building, located at Elmina, the capital of the Komenda, Edina, Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) Municipality, has developed deep and visible cracks compelling teachers to announce daily warnings to prevent the children from passing by the building.

The head teacher of Aktobinsin Methodist Kindergarten and Primary School, Janet Biney spoke to Citi News and noted that the building was the school itself “is 142 years old and the building is extremely old.”

“It is very very frightening and that is why we have been chasing it up. It has to be pulled down as soon as possible… All that we are hoping for is that the government will pull this thing down,” she said.

Building collapse at Breman

Six kindergarten pupils of the Breman Gyambra Methodist KG School were killed when their dilapidated classroom block collapsed in January in the Asikuma Odoben-Brakwa District.

Three other pupils were also left in a critical condition after the collapse.

The three children, who are pupils of the Redemption International School, were playing around the single room structure, during their break time and were injured in the incident.

The parents of the three were in shock when the headmaster informed them of the sudden incident.

The remaining portion of the dilapidated building, which is located about 30 meters away from the Redemption International School, has been ordered by the Chief of Awutu Ofadaa to be demolished with immediate effect.

Two of the three primary two pupils have been treated and discharged, whilst the third child has been referred to the Agona Swedru Hospital.

The Bodwease District Police Commander, ASP Bernard Norgah, told Citi News the community was in a state of calm despite the incident.

ACP Timothy Yosa Bonga, the Accra Regional Police Commander confirmed the incident to Citi News.

ACP Bonga said that when the police first go word of the collapse, a nearby patrol team was notified.

“When the patrol team came, they informed us that a portion of the building here has collapsed so we quickly had to radio other patrol teams and all of us moved in to assist with the situation,” he said.

“We are told there were only 2 people up there trying to work and one managed to escape and the other one was trapped.”

“With the help of the fire service and a rescue team, we have been able to retrieve the body that was trapped in the debris,” ACP Bonga added.
