Scores of bonded unemployed nurses and midwives on Tuesday besieged the premises of the Ministry of Health to demand posting.

The trained health professionals said they have been idling at home for the past two years after successfully leaving school and completing their mandatory national service.

[contextly_sidebar id=”gPm0RVNAeF8K7wumG2K5RnKPTaZwcoFW”]The spokesperson of the group, Daniel Obuor, said the Ministry has failed to respond to their various letters over their unemployment.

“We have been here several times and each time we come they will tell you they are working on it. They will say go and come the next day… We just went there are they are still telling us that they don’t have our list. We are having challenges. We are now burdens in our homes,” he said.

Picketing at the Health Ministry to demand employment has become a common phenomenon for various health professionals in the country especially in the last three (3) years.

The government has consistently given assurances that it will address their demands, but that has often been after series of protests including picketing at the ministry.

Late in 2017, a group of unemployed nurses spent two days at the Ministry demanding their posting. They had their issue resolved after they spent the night at the Ministry.

Some of the frustrated jobless nurses now deem it worthwhile to refer their concerns to the media since they believe the Ministry deliberately ignore their concerns and fail to respond to letters over their unemployment.

The commitment of the government to absorbing these doctors, and healthcare in general, was recently questioned when one of the doctors wrote to Citi FM conveying the frustration of the jobless doctors who ready to serve the country.

The Coalition of Unemployed Private Nurses has described as improper, government’s decision to prioritize the employment of nurses trained in public institutions over them.

According to the group made up of over three thousand qualified nurses from accredited private Nursing training schools, government’s continuous preferential treatment defeats the constitutional provision of equal opportunity for all citizens.

[contextly_sidebar id=”GvqBxDhkX7G7ooqivQpDq6K1dH9V0t7o”]They argue that they are equally qualified to be recruited by the government to serve in various public health institutions.

Addressing the press on Monday, spokesperson for the group, Doreen Boateng, called on the government to reconsider its stance on the matter within five days or face their wrath.

“We paid our own tuition fees. So we should be the first to be on the list for government posting. We didn’t burden the state. The unwarranted loyalty of government to train nurses and to the neglect of all other suitable qualified nurses poses a threat to national security,” she said.

She further noted that, the policy not to bond privately trained nurses and their inability to immediately secure employment in private medical facilities is discriminatory.

“The consistent government mantra of bonding has risen to discriminate against us and that is not backed by any law in Ghana,” she added.

Various groups of trainee and trained nurses have in recent times protested against the government over  similar issues of delayed posting.

Some have had to picket at the Ministry of Health for nights before securing their posting.

The Coalition of Unemployed Bonded Diploma Nurses, has issued a ten-day ultimatum to the Ministry of Health to effect their financial clearance for onward posting.

The group, which has over the last two days been picketing at the premises of the Ministry, has subsequently suspended its protest.

Addressing a press briefing today [Wednesday], the leader of the group, Abdul Ganiu, said, “We the Coalition of Unemployed Diploma Nurses, 2015 batch, who have been picketing at the premises of the Ministry of Health from 24th to 26th of April 2017, have resolved to return to our various homes after extensive consultation with the Ministry of Health, and other major stakeholders in the country. Upon meeting with the PRO of the said Ministry, we are made to understand that our concerns will be addressed with the necessary speed it deserves.”

“We therefore bring to the notice of stakeholders and the good people of Ghana that, we are granting the Ministry of Health from 26th of April, 2017, to 5th of May , 2017, to resolve this issue amicably. We therefore state emphatically that, failure by the Ministry of Health to get us cleared and posted within the stipulated time, will compel us to send our plea to the father of the land, his excellency, Nana Akufo Addo.”

The Association, which is made up of over 1,200 professionally trained nurses from various public and private health training institutions cross the country, accused the Health Ministry of acting in bad faith.

On Tuesday, some of the Nurses pitched camp outside the Health Ministry to mark the second day of their picketing at the Ministry, after they spent the night there.

The nurses have been demanding the clearance and postings from the Finance Ministry, two years after they completed their programme at the various nursing training colleges.
