Police in the Eastern Region are on a manhunt for persons who turned the Nsukwao River within the New Juaben Municipality red.

The Nsukwao Township in Koforidua was agog on Saturday after residents saw the river that passes through the area turning red with some suspecting that it was blood.

Some residents had immediately read superstition into the incident, as pictures of it that went viral on social media also suggested.

But preliminary investigations by the police suggest that, the water changed its colour because some “unscrupulous” people poured certain chemicals into it.

Speaking to Citi News on the development, the Eastern Regional Police Commander in charge of Public Affairs ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, said the culprits will be dealt with accordingly.

“Our preliminary investigations show that, it was not blood, but rather some unscrupulous persons might have poured some chemicals into it upstream and that was what was flowing downstream.”

He also told Citi News that the river body is currently gaining its original form.

The river as we speak now, is regaining its normal colour which is white and odorless. That confirms our suspicion that it’s not blood but chemicals,” ASP Tetteh added.

A former Chief of Staff under the erstwhile Kufuor Administration, Kwadwo Mpiani says the election of regional representatives to the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was a sham.

The party’s constitution requires the National Council which is the second highest decision making body of the party to be re-constituted after every four years.

The party earlier appointed twelve representatives from each region to chair the Council.

A party member however challenged the current constitution of the Council, compelling the party to hold elections to officially appoint its representatives again.

The NPP concluded the election over the weekend.

The election which took place across the country saw some party stalwarts retain their positions in the Council.

Mr. Mpiani who was a member of the National Council from the Ashanti region says he refused to contest because the election did not follow the constitution of the party.

According to him, prior to any regional election, notice of elections should be given.

He also stated that people who are interested in contesting for various positions in the party should write a petition letter and pay some fees before elections can take off.

“You vet to find out if they are really members of your party and set a date for the election, then you have guidelines for the national head office telling you how the whole thing should be done” Mr Mpiani added.

According to him, since the party did not follow the entire process, its electoral procedure was wrong.

“I don’t believe any of these things was done. The directive from the head office came on Friday and on that very day, one region held its elections, the following day others followed. I think the procedure was wrong,” Mr Mpiani said.

A former Chief of Staff under the Kufuor administration, Kwadwo Mpiani has denied given orders for the payment of $ 500,000 into a Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) account for the financing of the CAN 2008 tournament in Ghana.

This follows a revelation made by embattled businessman, Alfred Woyome in court on Monday that ahead of the CAN 2008 tournament, the then Chief of Staff, Mr. Mpiani ordered the payment of $500,000 into a GNPC account at Prudential bank to finance initial projects for the tournament.

Responding to the claim on Eyewitness News on Monday, Mr. Mpiani denied saying, “he is lying…I am not aware of any such thing…definitely I have not done that and I am not aware of that.”

He indicated his readiness to appear in court to answer questions relating to the matter.

According to him, Mr. Woyome is in court trying to prove his case but his account of the payment of the said amount is untrue.

“I am saying he is lying and I don’t know whether he has perjured himself in court or not but what he said in court, I am saying it’s a lie as far as I am concerned.

Former Attorney General (AG), Martin Amidu in 2012 dragged Mr. Woyome to court over GHC 51 million paid to him as judgement debt by the state.

Mr. Amidu subsequently went to court to help the state to retrieve the GHC 51 million, which he contended was wrongfully paid to Woyome.

The State prosecutors presented nine witnesses to testify against Mr. Woyome.

The case is being heard at the Accra High Court presided over by His Lordship Justice John Ajet-Nassam.

Since Mr. Woyome opened his defense in court, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong has been in court to support the prosecution team.
