A former Chief of Staff under the erstwhile Kufuor Administration, Kwadwo Mpiani says the election of regional representatives to the National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was a sham.
The party’s constitution requires the National Council which is the second highest decision making body of the party to be re-constituted after every four years.
The party earlier appointed twelve representatives from each region to chair the Council.
A party member however challenged the current constitution of the Council, compelling the party to hold elections to officially appoint its representatives again.
The NPP concluded the election over the weekend.
The election which took place across the country saw some party stalwarts retain their positions in the Council.
Mr. Mpiani who was a member of the National Council from the Ashanti region says he refused to contest because the election did not follow the constitution of the party.
According to him, prior to any regional election, notice of elections should be given.
He also stated that people who are interested in contesting for various positions in the party should write a petition letter and pay some fees before elections can take off.
“You vet to find out if they are really members of your party and set a date for the election, then you have guidelines for the national head office telling you how the whole thing should be done” Mr Mpiani added.
According to him, since the party did not follow the entire process, its electoral procedure was wrong.
“I don’t believe any of these things was done. The directive from the head office came on Friday and on that very day, one region held its elections, the following day others followed. I think the procedure was wrong,” Mr Mpiani said.
