The Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Interior is expected to visit Bimbilla in the Northern Region, following reports of rising tensions there.

On Monday, residents in Bimbila closed shops while parents rushed to schools to take their children home amidst suspicion of another violent clash between the two feuding factions.

[contextly_sidebar id=”mVCKXx5z9AKf2IdjqPk4uq9NhbydccyY”]Citi News’ Mohammed Aminu Alabira who reported from the Bimbilla Township stated that,“tension is mounting in Bimbilla over a possible clash again. Since morning, there have been rumours of a possible clash today.”

He added that, although there is heavy security in the township, most shops have been closed down. “I’ve seen school children running everywhere in town trying to get home. Shops and businesses have also closed down. Security is heavy on the grounds, both the military and police are visible in the area,” he added.

But speaking to Citi News, the Chairman of the Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament, Major Retired Derrick Oduro said the committee will visit the area to assess the situation and make some recommendations after their visit.

“Last week, we met with the National Security Minister and I spoke with him before we held the meeting. We have planned to move to the scene to see things ourselves and then at a committee, we make a recommendation and sit down with the security bosses and then we find lasting solutions to the crisis over there. Maybe this week we will take a trip to the place and get firsthand information on what we can do then the situation will be brought under control,” he revealed.

Three weeks ago, renewed clashes led to the death of seven women, two children and several houses were torched in the process.

Basic and second cycle schools in Bimbilla in the Nanumba north district of the Northern region, have resumed school after a week-long break following the chieftaincy conflict that broke out in the area.

Lives and property were lost and many got injured. Basic and second cycle schools in the area closed after violent clashes in the Township that left at least 10 dead.

The situation in Bimbilla is gradually improving, as people are seen going about their normal business. A visit by Citi News to some schools in the Bimbilla Township, saw some teachers busily teaching, though the number of students were not encouraging.

The Assistant Headmaster of one of the schools, attempted an explanation why the numbers were so.

“There is still insecurity in the town that is still holding the students. Some parents have also left the town because of the conflict and so the children themselves are not very certain; and even gathering together in schools, they still have the fears that something might happen. I am sure that is the reason why we don’t have a good number in school. I am the assistant headmaster, and I cannot guarantee the safety of both the master and students, what happened the last time, nobody expected it to happen; and so we cannot be sure that nothing will happen again,” he said.

The Assistant Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in charge of Finance and Administration, W.K Fuseini, said the directorate will be visiting some of the schools, to plead with parents to encourage their wards to go to school.

“I think what we are presently doing is that, we are trying to go around the schools to talk to the teachers, and also get some of the parents to talk to them about the need to let their wards come back to school, because as at now, the situation is calm, people are going to their farms, and stores are opened and everybody is going about their activities.”

“So we are doing all that we can,  because there is heavy security on the ground, and we hope that with the security nothing will happen again.”

A delegation of chiefs from the Northern Regional House of Chiefs led by Tulewura, Rashid Mahama, a representative of the President of the House Yagbon Wura, paid a courtesy call on the Regent of Bimbilla, Yakubu Andani Dasana.

This was to sympathize with chiefs and people of Nanung following chieftaincy-related clashes in the area that claimed 10 lives.

The leader of the delegation, Tulewura Rashid Mahama explained the purpose of the visit saying they were there to plead with the chiefs and elders to let peace prevail.

‘’We are here just to say our condolences to the chief of Nanung and his elders so that peace will prevail in this area. Ghana, we have our common law that if there is something happening, we have ways of addressing the issue but if you continue to say we are fighting each other, imaging the north, we have so many curfews in the north. The south is bigger than the north but we can count about six curfews already now in the northern region.  So chiefs, we are here to sympathize with you and plead with the two presidential chiefs in the north, that is Yagbon Wura and the Nayiri, they are pleading with you to let peace prevail in your area.”

The Regent of Bimbilla, Nyelinboligu Naa Yakubu Andani Dasana also expressed his disappointment with the regional house of chiefs for their silence on the Bimbilla disturbances saying, since the murder of the late overlord of Bimbilla, the Regional House of Chiefs have not issued a single statement to that effect.

The Regional House of Chiefs is the mouthpiece of all the chiefs in the region, and their silence on the Bimbilla issue is affecting them, he said.

“It’s unfortunate that we never heard from you. Because all the instances we have been attacked, my position here, where I sit here right now is by law and the customs of Nanung. If you are not comfortable with my line of work, if you are not comfortable with me performing my duties, you resort to the law. The Regional House of Chiefs is our mouthpiece; your silence affects us a lot.”

The delegation comprised seven eminent chiefs from three paramountcies in the northern region, namely Dagbon, Nayiri and Yagbon.

Tulewura as leader and representative of Yagbon Wura, Yoo Naa Mahama Abdulai, and Sagnari Naa Yakubu Abdulai representing Yaa Naa, Wuu Naa Sulemana Saaka and Gabu Naa John Dayari representing the Nayiri.

The rest are Buipe wura Wari F. Y. and Kangwura Jinkurigu I, representing the Yagbon wura.

Meanwhile, the curfew hours imposed on the Bimbilla Township have been reviewed from 4:00pm to 6:00am to 6:00pm to 6:00am effective February 17th, 2017.
