A Road and Building Consultant, Ing. Mahama Abdulai, has implored the Department of Urban Roads to as a matter of urgency, carry out a structural audit on the Atomic Junction overhead bridge, as well as buildings within the immediate precincts of the gas explosion site.

“When we have such disasters within a neighborhood, it calls for the structural integrity analysis of that stretch of the road including other buildings within the area that might have been affected…It is not far-fetched for the Department of Urban Roads to conduct a structural analysis of that stretch of the road and other structures in the area,” he noted in a Citi News interview.

[contextly_sidebar id=”n2x7LJIZBHRRKQcewR4j9qqL70H3UBI1″]Mr. Abdulai said these checks need to be done “to clear doubts of anybody who uses the flyover in the aftermath of the opening of the bridge to motorists and pedestrians alike.”

The Engineer maintained that, premium should be placed on conducting these checks, given the far-reaching impact of the gas explosion since occupants of buildings located several meters away reported some tremor.

“Some people all the way in Ashaley Botwe said they felt the impact,” he added.

7 people were killed, with 132 others injured as two gas explosions occurred at Atomic junction in Accra.

The explosions left many structures destroyed with some vehicles totally burnt.

There have been suggestions that the impact of the development will include weakened foundations of some nearby structures which may be dangerous to inhabit, until proper engineering works are carried out to guarantee their safety.

The Police in the Ashanti region, Kumasi have arrested three women for allegedly stealing a day-old baby at the Kumasi Children’s Home.

Speaking to Citi News, the Head of the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, ASP Regina Mintah said the Police arrested the suspects after being tipped off that Cecilia Anor, a trader at Kumasi Polytechnic had in her custody a stolen baby boy.

“Cecilia Anor was having in her custody a baby boy who was suspected not to be hers so the Police gathered intelligence to that effect and that led to her arrest,” ASP Mintah explained.

ASP Mintah further noted that Cecilia, after her arrest, confessed to the Police that she collected the baby from a typist at the Kumasi Children’s home known as Comfort Agyei.

Meanwhile, the three suspects are currently in police custody, assisting the police in their investigations.

The theft follows a similar incident at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) which led to the suspension of the doctor and nurse on duty at the hospital when the baby went missing.

The Health Ministry, since the news broke, has been making efforts to unravel the circumstances under which the baby went missing.

Ray J was arrested after getting into an altercation at a swanky Beverly Hills hotel on Friday night, according to multiple reports.

Authorities were called to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel after the singer, best known for making a sex tape in 2007 with Kim Kardashian, allegedly grabbed a woman’s backside, according to a release from the Beverly Hills Police Department.

Ray J, who was linked to Whitney Houston shortly before her death, was asked to leave the hotel after police spoke to him and the woman and determined that the incident was not a case of sexual battery and that the contact was “incidental.” But when the 33-year-old got to the valet area, he allegedly acted belligerently and refused to leave.

As police took the brother of singer and actress Brandy into custody, he allegedly kicked and shattered the side window of the police car and spat in an officer’s face. He was booked for trespassing, vandalism, resisting arrest and battery on a police officer.

His bail was set at $20,000, and he was released from custody on Friday night.

The Beverly Wilshite is not commenting on the incident. The rapper’s rep also declined comment.

Six men have been arrested in connection with the slashing of the neck of a 70-year-old man at Teshie in Accra.

The men, aged 28 to 74, include Joseph Ashikwei Tijany, Daniel Ashitei Okoe, Philip Boye and Nii Agoe Kaastso, all drivers.

The others are Nii Armah Agbeko, mason, and Michael Ashiboy Armah, businessman.

Disagreement over burial grounds

Speaking to journalists Wednesday, the Teshie District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Simon Agbodeka, said the victim, whose name has been withheld, is a family member of the suspects and lived at Teshie Camp II, while the suspects are residents of Teshie Bush Road.

He said during the time of making   arrangements for the funeral of the acting Djasetse of Lenshie, Nii Armah Jerry, a faction of the family, led by an elder, Nii Kwabotwe, protested against the burial of the deceased at the Lenshie Royal Cemetery.

“This brought confusion between the members of family and, on April 24, 2014, the Municipal Chief Executive invited the two sides to a meeting at LEKMA to discuss the issue,” he said.

At the meeting, the victim was threatened by Nii Kaastso, an elder of the family, who was said to have told the victim that he was not a member of the family but was parading himself as such.

Life Threat

According to the Teshie Police Commander, Nii Kaastso also threatened that “if the victim was not careful, his head would be cut off and put on a plate for display at Teshie”.

He said the threat on the life of the victim led to a confrontation and the leaders at the meeting had to intervene to calm down both sides.

About 7:30 a.m. the next day, the victim received a call from a group of young men he had instructed to dig a grave for the burial of the deceased traditional leader.

The grave diggers, Mr Agbodeka said, informed the victim that some followers of one of the family elders called Nii Kwabotwe had attacked them.

The complainant was said to have rushed to the scene to find out what was happening.

At the cemetery, the commander said, one of the suspects, Agbeko, stood on the wall of the cemetery and engaged in an argument with the grave diggers.

The four other suspects — Tijany, Okoe, Ashiboy Armah and Boye — who were also in the cemetery, tried to prevent the men from digging the grave.

Struggle at cemetery

He said before the victim could get to the graveside, the four suspects, who were in the cemetery, abandoned their scuffle with the grave diggers and rushed towards him and tried to prevent him from getting near.

In the course of the struggle, Tijany, who stood behind the victim, drew a kitchen knife from his pocket and slashed the neck of the 70-year-old man.

The victim sustained a deep cut from the jaw down to the throat and was said to have bled profusely.

The police commander said apart from Agbeko, the other suspects just looked on while the man shouted for help.

Agbeko, with the help of the grave diggers and some good Samaritans at the cemetery, rushed the victim to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he was admitted.

Arrest of suspects

Subsequently, a complaint was made to the police, which led to the arrest of the six suspects on May 19, 2014.

Even though the suspects denied the allegation in their statements to the police, they were charged after the police had concluded their investigations.

Two Ghanaians, including the owner of Le Baron Hotel at East Legon in Accra, David Kwadwo Anim, have been busted at the Heathrow Airport in London for alleged drug trafficking and money laundering.

The other suspect is Kofi Antwi Nkansah, a businessman.

They were arrested by the London Metropolitan Police.

Anim has been described by the security agencies as the leader within the drug trafficking organisation responsible for co-ordinating the transportation of large quantities of cocaine and heroin around the world.

Major drug gangs

He is also alleged to have serious ties with major drug gangs in Europe, South America and the United States of America.

The two suspects were said to have delivered 500 kilogrammes of heroin to undercover drug enforcement officials on January 22, 2014 without any incident.

Provisional  arrest warrant

Briefing the Daily Graphic in Accra Monday, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), Nii Lante Blankson, said the arrest was in pursuant to a provisional arrest warrant issued by the United States for the arrest of the two Ghanaians and a Nigerian.

According to him, Anim, Nkansah and Adjayi Akpo, the Nigerian, had each been indicted and charged in the Southern District Court of New York for the violation of United States Drug Enforcement laws.

He said Adjayi was, however, on the run but said an intensive search had been mounted for his arrest.

Nii Blankson said since 2012, the NACOB, in collaboration with its foreign counterparts, had been conducting a joint operation on Anim.

The arrests

He said Anim had been able to escape arrest until April 26, 2014 when he was busted at the Heathrow Airport while going through arrival formalities.

Nii Blankson indicated that the following day, April 27, 2014, Nkansah was also arrested on arrival at Heathrow from one of the Asian countries.

He said the two suspects were to be extradited from the United Kingdom to the Unites States to face trial.

The Manhyia Divisional Police Command in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday arrested 86 suspected criminals from their hideouts in a special operation carried out in some communities within the jurisdiction of the Command in the Kumasi Metropolis.

The Police suspected them to be engaging in narcotics, gambling and prostitution.

They are made up of 42 females and 44 males and were arrested at Asafo, around the Rex Cinema and the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI), Oforikrom and Dichemso near the Plaza Hotel.

Chief Superintendent Deborah Campbell, the Divisional Commander told journalists at a briefing in Kumasi on Friday that, almost all the women were arrested on suspicion of soliciting for sex.

She explained that the operation was to send a strong signal to criminals living within the communities that, the police was poised to deal with crime without any fear or favour.

Chief Superintendent Campbell expressed gratitude to the opinion leaders in the communities for their support to the police in an effort to reduce criminal activities, especially in the zongo communities.

She noted that the Zongo communities were made up of good and law abiding people and the Command would not sit down for a few ones with criminal minds to tarnish the image of the communities in the Kumasi metropolis.

“For some time now, there had been sanity in the Division but the Command still want to maintain that level of sanity, as those few ones would be fished out”, she stressed.

The Police is currently screening the suspects and those found culpable would be arraigned in due course.

The Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service has busted a fishing boat for illegally buying a bulk consignment of fish from a foreign fishing vessel offshore.

The boat – Kitua Biaa Nsua – with a crew of 10, was busted about 6.2 nautical miles off the coast in the Western Region early yesterday.

The crew had carried out the transshipment with Rongcheng Marine Fishing Company, the owner of the foreign vessel.

At the time of the arrest, the industrial vessel and the buyer had finished the transaction offshore and the buyer was transporting the consignment to the shore when the police intercepted the boat.

Fish

The police said during inspection, they found that the boat had 2,080 huge slabs of iced fish concealed in its compartments but had no fishing net or  equipment to show that it was returning from a fishing expedition.

The Director of Marine at the Ports and Railways in Takoradi, Chief Superintendent Samuel Owusu-Berko, told the Daily Graphic that the crew confessed purchasing the fish from the foreign vessel, a transaction which is against the country’s laws.

Transshipment is said to be one of the worst challenges facing the country’s maritime domain.

Chief Superintendent Owusu-Berko said it was important to note that because the industrial vessels knew the implication of  transshipment offshore, they always contacted their accomplices onshore and sold the illegal catches to them.

Ownership

C/Supt. Owusu-Berko said after the boat had been busted, a woman who gave her name as Diana Mireku came forward and claimed ownership of the consignment.

The woman and the 10-member crew have been arrested to help the police in their investigations.

C/Supt. Owusu-Berko said the arrest should serve as notice to people, especially the fishing community, that the Marine Police were on the alert and collaborating with sister agencies within the country’s maritime domain to make the coast unattractive for illegal fishing and trading.

The police, he said, had invited the Fisheries Commission for valuation of the entire consignment and take the woman who claimed ownership through the legal process.
