Former “Glee” star Naya Rivera was arrested Saturday night for allegedly assaulting her husband in West Virginia, authorities said.
Rivera, 30, was charged with misdemeanour domestic battery early Sunday following the incident in her husband’s hometown of Chesapeake.

She was arraigned at the Kanawha County Magistrate Court and released on bond after a brief court appearance, court records show.

Video of the actress in court showed her wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and handcuffs as she answered the judge’s questions, CNN affiliate WCHS reported.

The incident started when police were called to a Chesapeake home over a domestic situation, according to a criminal complaint.

When they got there, Rivera’s husband, Ryan Dorsey, said that she had hit him in the head and on the bottom lip while they were taking their child for a walk down a street, the criminal complaint states.

Dorsey gave police a cell phone video of the assault, leading to Rivera’s arrest, according to the complaint. During a brief court appearance, Rivera said she plans to hire an attorney.

Domestic battery carries a maximum of a year in prison and a fine of up to $500, court records show.

CNN has reached out to Rivera’s publicist but has not heard back.

Rivera and Dorsey got married in 2014 in Mexico. Dorsey is a fellow actor, and has made appearances in “Southland” and FX comedy “You’re the Worst.”

Kwasi Akuffo, a 56-year-old driver, on Monday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly impregnating his 15-year-old house help.

Akuffo, charged with defilement, has pleaded guilty with explanation.

He is said to have continuously defiled the victim after she had delivered. The victim got pregnant during the initial sexual advances from Akuffo.

The court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh deferred Akuffo’s sentence to October 23, to enable the prosecution to ascertain the age of the victim. Akuffo has therefore been remanded into Police custody.

Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire narrated that, the complainant is a Social Worker with Adenta Welfare Department, whilst the victim is a school dropout residing at Adenta New Legon in Accra.

According to prosecution, Akuffo resides in the same house with the victim and his wife. Eight years ago, Akuffo‘s wife brought the victim to stay with them at Haatso to assist them with house chores.

In 2013 Akuffo, his wife and the victim relocated to Adenta New Legon where Akuffo’s wife engaged in soap making business.

During the month of April last year, at about 0900 hours, whilst Akuffo’s wife was away, Akuffo took advantage of the victim and had sex with her.

Prosecution said the victim got pregnant. After delivery, Akuffo’s wife took the victim to Dodowa Government Hospital where she undertook Family Planning Method.

Prosecution said investigations revealed that Akuffo continued to have sex with the victim even after the delivery.

The victim, who could not bear the situation any more reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit at Adenta and a Social Worker was assigned to the case.

The Police also issued a medical form to the victim to seek medical attention, Chief Inspector Atimbire added.

The Managment of Kona Cafe & Grill released a statement on its Facebook page apologising to a woman who was assaulted by one of its security personnel at the restaurant.

The assault, which took place on Friday evening, saw the staff, a bouncer, slap the customer after a misunderstanding over the purchase of drinks.

“We acknowledge the distress and embarrassment caused to our customers and we have already taken the necessary disciplinary actions against him,” the bar’s management said in a statement.

The bar has also assured that “necessary disciplinary actions” have been taken against the bouncer.

We, the Managment of Kona Cafe and Grill sincerely apologizes to our cherished customers for the unwarranted behaviour of our bouncer last night.

We wish to bring to the attention of our customers that we do not condone the behaviour of our staff especially violence against women, as that does not reflect the values of our establishment, And as such, take full responsibility for his actions. We plead with the general public to forgive us our failings, We learn from such experiences.

We acknowledge the distress and embarrassment caused to our customers and we have already taken the necessary disciplinary actions against him.

We apologise once again and promise that such an incident will not occur again.

The bouncer had wanted the customer and her party to leave their table for paying customers.

The group, however, had purchased drinks but a waitress had cleared their table as they waited for someone to join them.

The customer, who was assaulted, had passed a comment about embarrassing the situation angering the bouncer. He snapped at the lady and slapped her twice.

The bouncer was reported to the manager of the establishment, whose reaction downplaying the situation was described as insensitive and lackadaisical. She reportedly urged the victim of the assault to let it go.

The victim indicated she was going to the police to file a statement and fill out a medical report.

South Africa’s Deputy Education Minister Mduduzi Manana has appeared in court on a charge of assaulting a woman in a nightclub.

He was freed on $375 (£290) bail, pending further investigations.

The alleged assault caused outrage in South Africa, with many people demanding Mr Manana’s arrest.

He has apologised for what he called a “shameful incident”, saying that he had been provoked but he should have “exercised restraint”.

Mr Manana is alleged to have assaulted the woman during a row at the Cubana nightclub near the main city, Johannesburg, last Saturday.

Journalists were not allowed inside the courtroom and he was escorted through a separate entrance to avoid the media.

This is not common practice and will fuel claims that Mr Manana is receiving preferential treatment because he is a senior member of the government, the BBC’s Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg says.

South Africa’s Police Minister Fikile Mbalula denied Mr Manana would be treated differently from other defendants.

“The deputy minister will not be treated with special kid gloves but will face the full wrath of the law. The state fully supports the victim,” he said, at a news conference.

The Member of Parliament for the Wa Constituency, Rashid Pelpuo, has called on the Ministry of Employment to make public its inquiry into the Abelemkpe Marwako assault.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, tasked the Labour Department of his Ministry to conduct a labour audit and present its findings in a week, following the assault of a Ghanaian employee by her Lebanese supervisor.

[contextly_sidebar id=”OROb7NrB5nqu90mvXJINnq2dZDFDkEup”]But a month after the directive, the committee is yet to present its report.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Pelpuo said the case was of public interest and called for the release of the report to ensure transparency and to inform Ghanaians.

“We are still demanding to know what is happening. The Ministry must be up and doing. They must ensure that the report they have asked for, they receive and they would have to share it with the public.”

Mr. Pelpuo stressed the importance of the case, given the public investment and the fact that “an individual was abused and her person was attacked, so we want to see how that is playing out. It is important that we hear the results and see what happening.”

“…We are very much worried about the long silence on the part of the ministry after it had made strong demands and public demands on the labour report about what was happening.”

Jihad Chaaban

The victim in the case had her face forcibly pushed into a bowl of pepper by her Lebanese supervisor on Sunday, February 26.

Management of Marwako has since suspended the branch supervisor alleged to have physically assaulted the Ghanaian employee.

The supervisor in question, one Jihad Chaaban, was arrested and arraigned, but is currently on bail.

The man reportedly facing a bench warrant for allegedly leading a team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) loyalists to brutalize a Senior Police Officer at the Flagstaff House, Bawa Abdul Jalil, has denied allegations leveled against him.

A video that went viral on social media captured one ASP Nanka-Bruce, who served at the Flagstaff House under the past National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, being assaulted by men believed to be members of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) Security, the Invisible Forces.

The Interior Minister subsequently stated that, a bench warrant had been issued to apprehend the culprits, including Bawa Abdul Jalil who was named as one of the suspects.

[contextly_sidebar id=”iF2ofHRYl8PsHwFIa1ZEzbMq0xwtDEXw”]But speaking on the Point Blank segment of Eyewitness News, Bawa Abdul Jalil denied his involvement in the said incident, saying “ I am fully aware of the information that is going round on social media, but the entire bench warrant issue is a fabrication. The name is not even mine, and picture has been photo-shopped. This incident has nothing to do with me.”

According to Bawa Abdul Jalil, he was only arrested for “jogging” around the Flagstaff House without substantial evidence to prove his involvement in the incident.

“I was one of the people who was arrested for jogging at the Flagstaff House. They accused us of planting juju for Akufo Addo to become President and for that matter they have to investigate the matter. I was handcuffed and brutalized together with my friend and they took us to the BNI for three good days without any charge and my lawyers had to intervene.”

He challenged persons who were alleging his involvement in the assault to provide evidence, saying “I was not involved, and I challenge anybody at all to bring evidence to show that I assaulted ASP Nanka Bruce.”

Following Nana Akufo-Addo’s victory in the country’s 2016 presidential elections, there have been several reports of violent clashes between supporters of his New Patriotic Party (NPP) and loyalists of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Most of these clashes resulted from attempts by NPP supporters to forcibly take over jobs and government operations from supposed NDC supporters.

President Akufo-Addo, on his part, condemned the violent incidents that occurred during the transition period earlier in 2017, during his State of the Nation Address.

The President described such acts as undignified, saying they must not be allowed to continue in the country.

A soldier stormed the Benkum Senior High Secondary School at Larteh in the Eastern Region on Friday, to assault a teacher who allegedly slapped his son, a student in the school.

The soldier, Warrant Officer (W/O) Adu-Bekoe, is the father of a final year general arts student, Samuel Odei, who is also a basketball player of the school.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LTESrWpnyUYDZVlcSHjMZDOb0wRz4kfG”]Samuel Odei reportedly called his father to inform him about an incident between him and a mathematics teacher, Kwadwo Darko, which led to the teacher slapping him.

Samuel Odei did not take the incident lightly, and proceeded to tell his father about it who, within two hours, came to the school with other two military colleagues all clad in uniforms to assault the maths teacher in the full glare of some students and teachers of the school.

It is unclear what might have caused the teacher to slap the student, but for the timely intervention of the Larteh and Akropong Police, the situation would have gotten out of hand, as the incident caused growing tension and unrest among some staff members and students, who were fed up and nearly retaliated at a point.

A teacher of the school who witnessed the incident and tried to intervene, narrated to Citi News that “at around 5:00pm on Friday, W/O Adu-Bekoe in the company of other two military officers all in green camouflage, came to the school with a taxi cab, and all three headed straight to the headmaster’s office.

“…After a short while, I sighted one of the military men and W/O Adu-Bekoe holding and dragging Mr. Kwadwo Darko the maths teacher by the waist of his trousers, they hit him as they dragged him along so I hurriedly called in some of the teachers to help intervene.”

He added that “the maths teacher who also functions on the Prep Committee of the school had his shirt all torn and a serious argument ensued between the teachers and the military men, but police personnel from both Larteh and Akropong arrived to control the situation at around 6:00pm.

The teacher continued that, the police then led the 3 military personnel, the victim Mr. Darko, the Assistant headmaster and the Headmaster to the latter’s office where they held a short meeting and then moved to the Akropong Police station.

The employee at the Abelemkpe branch of Marwako Fast Foods in Accra who was allegedly assaulted by her Supervisor says she wants nothing but justice.

The 25 –year old said she was kept in the facility for several hours after her face was dipped in hot pepper by her Supervisor, Jihad Chaaban, preventing her other worried colleagues from helping her.

[contextly_sidebar id=”h0hKJvMmhSM6Q1H2dg8XuWzOPho1LTsF”]Speaking to Citi FM’s Philip Ashon, the victim said she wants justice to prevail to serve as a deterrent to both foreign and local employers maltreating their workers.

“I want justice to prevail so that next time when these people come here and work with us, they will know that we have our right to say what is bothering us.”

She also recounted her ordeal, saying: “It was on Sunday, I went to work so after the rain stopped, I was at my department and one Supervisor called me to go and help someone to blend fresh pepper because there was pressure so I went to the Rice department . While I was blending the pepper, the blender was making noise …Then all of a sudden Mr . Jihad appeared and started shouting on me and insulting me, asking me whether I did not know I was destroying the blender , then I told him: ‘Mr. Jihad it is just fresh pepper.’ Before I could open my mouth again, he put my face inside the blender and when I tried taking my face from blender, the pepper split into my eyes and my face…All I could do was to cry.”

She also revealed some unfavourable conditions employees at Marwako go through before their salaries are paid.

She disclosed that their phones are often seized when they arrive at the workplace, and that they are sometimes forced to work beyond the stipulated hours.

Evelyn Boakye earns 300 cedis a month.

“When the month ends, two weeks before they pay or sometimes a week before they pay us. It is high time we let them know we are in our country. Not that if they do something wrong, they give us small money to shut our mouths. It is high time we let them know that we are in our country, not in their country. We cannot go into their country and do this. It will never happen. And moreover their ladies are not working, we are working so they should not treat us like slaves.”

She also revealed how some of her Ghanaian colleagues at the workplace including a Ghanaian supervisor, disagreed with her decision to demand justice and rather encouraged her to take money from the managers as compensation.

She said when the incident happened, her Ghanaian supervisor, one Ali, told her that she wasn’t the first person to have experienced that treatment at the Restaurant, and so she shouldn’t make an issue out of it.
