It was 1993 when Arnold Schwarzenegger came out with one of his most unique tough guy movies, “Last Action Hero.”

A mix of action and comedy that follows a boy with a magic ticket, who suddenly is transported through the big screen and into the latest movie of his favorite actor, Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger), it’s filled with huge fight scenes, gun fights, explosions, and fun jabs at Schwarzenegger and the action movie genre.

But nobody went to see the movie.

With a 37% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a $137 million worldwide gross (which doesn’t even crack the top ten for that year), the movie was considered a colossal disappointment.

However, looking back on it now, Schwarzenegger believes there were a lot of forces against him around the time the movie came out.

“Don’t forget that the year that movie came out it was the year to beat on Arnold,” Schwarzenegger told Business Insider.

Before the movie opened the Hollywood trades had constant coverage of its shaky production, which finished just months before it opened in theaters, along with reports on the movie getting negative test scores.

But Schwarzenegger feels even the newly-elected president, Bill Clinton, had something to do with the movie’s poor performance.

“It was one of those things where President Clinton was elected and the press somehow made the whole thing kind of political where they thought, ‘Okay, the ‘80s action guys are gone here’s a perfect example,’ and they wrote this narrative before anyone saw the movie,” Schwarzenegger said, while promoting his new movie “Killing Gunther” (currently available on streaming and in theaters Friday).

Schwarzenegger, who is a Republican and former governor of California, felt that the combination of bad press surrounding the movie and the entrance of a Democrat into the White House led to a situation where he couldn’t win.

“The action hero era is over, Bill Clinton is in, the highbrow movies are the ‘in’ thing now, I couldn’t recuperate,” he said.

He did though — a year later. Teaming with his “Terminator” movies director James Cameron, they made the spy action movie “True Lies,” which earned over $378 million worldwide and was the third-highest-grossing domestic release of the year.

And as the years have passed, “Last Action Hero” has been rediscovered by new audiences.

“I think more people would have seen it if the press treated it differently, but now the good thing is that with streaming people can go and watch it,” Schwarzenegger said.

Arnold Schwarzenegger regrets that he’s unable to run for president because he wasn’t born in the US.

“If I’d been born in America, I would’ve run,” he told Adweek in a new cover interview. “Because now? This was a very good time to get in the race.”

In the wake of Donald Trump’s controversy over a leaked “Access Hollywood” tape, Schwarzenegger announced on Twitter to his nearly four million followers that he won’t be voting for the real-estate mogul.

“For the first time since I became a citizen in 1983, I will not vote for the Republican candidate for president,” he wrote.

As governor, Schwarzenegger was known to utilize stunts and gimmicks to get people’s attention — something he learned as a young man in the 1960s.

“I realized early on in bodybuilding that you have to be able to sell yourself, your ideas, your position to the public,” he said. “You have to set yourself apart, whether it’s policy or movies. How do you make them remember you?”

Fiscally conservative and socially liberal, Schwarzenegger would certainly have rocked the boat if he were allowed to run in this race.

“I didn’t love politics, but I love policy,” he said.

Spain striker Diego Costa has passed a medical at Chelsea ahead of a proposed £32m transfer from Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea met the buyout clause in the 25-year-old’s contract with Atletico and he will now negotiate personal terms.

Costa scored 36 goals in 52 games for Atletico this season as they won their first La Liga title since 1996 and reached the Champions League final.

The Brazil-born forward is in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said in May that the addition of a “killer” strikerwould be a key priority during the summer.

The London club scored 71 goals in the Premier League this season, 31 fewer than champions Manchester City, who finished four points ahead of them.

Chelsea strikers Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba contributed a total of 19 of those in the league, with 33-year-old Eto’o, now a free agent, scoring nine of them.

“We have to try to win as a team, to improve as a team, but also add the attacking player with that killer instinct,” Mourinho said last month.

Mourinho will hope that Costa will go some way towards addressing that problem having enjoyed a prolific campaign with Atletico.

Costa scored 27 goals in La Liga and only finished third behind Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (31) and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (28) on the list of top goalscorers.

The striker also scored against Chelsea from the penalty spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League, one of his eight goals in the tournament, as Atletico came from behind to win 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Costa was born and raised in Brazil and made two friendly appearances for them last year before he became a naturalised Spaniard.
