Domestic airline company, Africa World Airlines (AWA), is assuring its customers of their continuous safety on the company’s flights.

The assurance comes on the back of an incident it witnessed on one of its aircrafts on a flight to Kumasi on Sunday, March 11, 2018.

A statement from AWA and copied to Citi Business News attributed the incident to a bird strike which affected the aircraft’s engine temporarily.

According to AWA, the engine has since been declared as serviceable as the aircraft has also carried passengers back to Accra devoid of any mishap.

Consumer rights agency, CUTS International wants authorities to be tough and avert consumer exploitation in the domestic aviation industry.

It follows the sole operation of Africa World Airlines (AWA) in the domestic aviation sector.

Africa World Airlines became the single company flying domestically after the suspension of operations of Starbow Airlines in December 2017.

The development has since been met with mixed reactions from industry players due to the possible exploitation by the company.

Centre Coordinator for CUTS International, Accra Appiah Kusi Adomako doesn’t have any issue with monopoly but he tells Citi Business News the company would breach international laws when it fails to control its fares.

“AWA should make sure it puts a kind of a cap on its prices for any particular route; that is fares are charged above a particular level regardless of the distance .In that regard we can say that consumers are getting some kind of fairness in the market,” he explained.

Already, AWA has had to bear the brunt of increased passenger volumes during the yuletide where some passengers were stranded at the Tamale airport due to delayed flights.

At the time, the passengers threatened court action over the failure to address their concerns.

In the meantime, consumers are highly anticipating the commencement of operations of Baby Jet Airlines by June this year.

The Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Simon Allotey earlier explained to Citi Business News the role it will play in deepening competition.

“If the company works very hard and their manuals are found satisfactory and they have the aircraft they intend to operate and assuming all things are in place, then within six months they can complete the certification process,” he said.

For Mr. Appiah Adomako Kusi, Ghana should also expedite processes to pass the competition law to address any teething issues bordering on monopoly.

“We are hoping that the document can easily go to Parliament for the House to deliberate on it and also get stakeholder input and subsequently passed into law. But as an organization, we are working with all agencies to ensure that we get a competition law passed this year,” he reiterated.

Ghana’s only surviving domestic air service provider, Africa World Airlines (AWA) left many of its passengers stranded at the Tamale Airport on Friday.

Some of the passengers have since threatened to sue the company as they lamented that the delay had negatively affected their schedules.

A number of the angry passengers said they had purchased their air tickets as early as three weeks prior to the flight to Accra and had not expected such a delay.

Passengers with return tickets for Thursday, November 21 , 2017 were compelled to stay in Tamale as a result of the cancelled flight, which management of AWA could not give a reason for.

This additional cost and AWA’s management failure to explain the hiccups incurred the wrath of the passengers who said they will use legal means to address the matter.

An officer at the Ghana Health Service in Bolgatanga who was also affected, Michael Kyei Mensah, accused the AWA management of being indifferent despite the challenge.

“These are contract agreements that you book and pay for the tickets. I got to the airport, joined the queue and got to the counter only to be told that I was late for check-in for a flight that delayed for two hours.”

“I am one of those passengers ready to sue Africa World Airlines because they can’t be treating people like trash. I am even connecting to Kumasi only to be treated this way,” he told Citi News.

Others who could not control their anger vented their spleen on AWA officers at the Airport.

“You cannot take the law into your hands and do what you want and tell us that we are late. Are we kids here and you think we don’t know what we are about?”

Some passengers who had urgent appointments were compelled to travel by road from Tamale to Accra through Kumasi.

A physically challenged pastor, Mr Clement Ofori, has threatened to drag Africa World Airline (AWA) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to court for disembarking him from an aircraft because of his disability.

The 37-year-old clergyman, who is the General Overseer of the House of the Rock Ministry, was not allowed to embark on a journey to Nigeria via the airline even though he had paid for the ticket.

The authorities of the airline also declined to refund the $700 he had paid for the trip to Onitsha, Nigeria, in spite of his plea.

Explaining issues to the Daily Graphic last week, Pastor Ofori said the authorities of the airline gave the flimsy excuse that they could not guarantee his safety because they did not have facilities for disabled persons on the flight.

“I felt so disheartened as to how a human being could be subjected to such inhumane treatment, simply because someone thinks disabled persons are a nonentity because of their disability.”

“I will not leave this issue to die here in Ghana. I have contacted my lawyers in London. I will sue the GCAA and Africa World. I am ready to lay down my life to fight for the rights of disabled persons,” he said.

Narration

Narrating his story, Pastor Ofori said the incident happened on April 25 this year when he booked the AWA flight to attend a church programme at Onitsha, Nigeria.

“I had the shock of my life when I was marched off the plane when the authorities realised that I was physically challenged.”

“I was the first to get on board, but a few minutes later, one of the officials came and told me to get down because they were no longer flying.

“All attempts to seek clarification from them failed. When they escorted me to the departure hall, I heard an announcement that passengers should get on board the same plane for the journey.”

“I was later told that because I was disabled, they could not secure my safety. But they refused to refund the $700 I paid for the ticket, on the grounds that money paid was not refundable,” he said.

In the light of the traumatic situation Pastor Ofori went through, some disability organisations have decided to support him to take legal action against the airline.

Response

When the Daily Graphic contacted AWA for its response to the issue, an official at the Operations Control Department (OCD) of the airline declined to give any official position on it.

The official, who later invited two other officers believed to be from the same department, maintained that “to the best of my knowledge, this issue has been addressed by our lawyer and Pastor Ofori’s lawyer”.

“They made some demands and our lawyer replied them. The two parties have met and ironed out things and our lawyer requested that the issue should not be put out in the media.”

“If they have decided to go to the media, we should be suing them as well,” the unnamed official said.

Further checks

Meanwhile, further checks by the Daily Graphic showed that there had been no official agreement between the airline and Pastor Ofori.
