The Member of Parliament for the Kpone Katamanso constituency, Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo will not contest the 2020 parliamentary elections due to his role as regent of Katamanso.

The Member of Parliament who has been the representative of the people of Kpone Katamanso since 2009 was earlier this year installed as regent of Katamanso.

Nii Laryea noted that his decision not to contest the seat again is borne out of the new position he occupies as the regent of Katamanso in the Nungua Traditional Area.

According to the Kpone Katamanso legislator, he is grooming someone to takeover from him in the constituency when he finally steps down as the MP.

“I have decided with my kingsmen I am not going to seek re-election as MP again when I finally bring my tenure of office to MP to an end thus I am seriously grooming one fine gentleman to take over the mantle of leadership as MP in the area when I finally step down in 2020,” he noted.

Clearing all doubts, Afotey-Agbo noted that “my enstoolment as regent will not interfere with my role as an MP in any way since I am only playing an acting role as regent. A regent can not be gazzetted so it will in no way interfere with my job as an MP. I am not a substantive chief but just acting in the absence of the chief who has been unwell for some time.”

Mr Afotey-Agbo was enstooled as regent of Katamanso to take up the affairs of the divisional area due to the ailing health of the current chief Nii Otu Akwetey.

Nii Otu Akwetey who is the current chief of Katamanso has been unwell for some time and could no longer run the affairs of the area hence the need for the elders to enstool the MP as the regent to act on behalf of the ailing chief.

Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has urged public servants to be professional in the discharge of their work and continually serve the country with patriotism, neutrality, fairness and loyalty when government changes hands.

He said the service was a noble profession and that there was the need for them to guard against any acts that would affect their image.

“The country’s unity is sometimes undermined by polarization along party lines and we need to work with renewed commitment to national development and devote our energies to activities that will change our destiny and build a solid foundation for posterity,” he said.

The Minister gave the advice at the weekend at the end-of-year party for staff of the Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council in recognition of their support and hard work during 2016.

The event created the platform for staff and management to socialize and share ideas.

Nii Afotey Agbo said the role of public servants in economic development could not be over emphasized, adding that the growth and development of every economy hinged on how resources were judiciously managed to the benefit of the citizenry.

He commended staff for their selfless contribution in demonstrating a high sense of professionalism in the services they rendered to government over the years.

The Minister said the Ministry had partnered with China through the Economic and Commercial Counselor’s Office out of which more than 60 staff had been trained in China in 2016, from all the Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies across the country.

He called for unity among staff members, forgiveness of one another, reconciliation and tolerance to ensure peaceful coexistence.

He commended the security agencies, especially members of the Regional Security Council, for their immense support in maintaining law and order during the 2016 general election.

He urged the staff to give the incoming administration the necessary support in order to achieve the goals of the nation.

Some retirees were presented with refrigerators and washing machines for their selfless contributions and meritorious service.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, has rejected claims that the National Democratic Congress government was defeated because of utterances made by the founder of the party, Jerry John Rawlings.

According to him, the former president cannot be blamed because he provided good counsel which could have kept them in power if they had listened to him.

“I don’t think the former president should be blamed for anything because this is somebody I’ve been with at a very close range and worked with and I don’t think he needs to be blamed for whatever situation we are in now. He gave us all the needed advice, whatever it takes for us to remain in office. If at a point he kept quiet, he wasn’t coming out again, I don’t see why he should be blamed for whatever situation we are in now as a political party,” he added.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SsZw9DNaUiMKzfuurxcxhkQr4bpFrSw4″]Afotey-Agbo made the comment in response to the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the NDC, Anthony Nukpenu, who accused the party’s founder of contributing to their loss.

According to Nukpenu Mr. Rawlings painted the NDC as corrupt, which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) capitalized on to campaign against them.

“We as a party we have a founder in the person of Jerry John Rawlings and as party members we felt he should be a protective cover for the party and the government but he chose to arm the opposition against us.  The NPP got to our heels by campaigning against us heavily on this so called corruption perception and anytime they made that claim they claimed that the founder of the NDC is the one who said the president is the most corrupt person and his appointees are very corrupt so they should be voted out. So if you have this message being used against you by your political opponents and courtesy the founder of your party it goes a long way to affect your political fortunes. And that has been one of the tools that have heated us to have this humiliating defeat,” he argued.

But speaking on Eyewitness News, the outgoing Greater Accra Regional Minister said Nukpenu’s assertion cannot be true because Mr. Rawlings did nothing wrong.

He further blamed their defeat on some District Chief Executives who he said failed to offer the needed services to their constituents.

“We cannot even blame anybody for our loss. If we had done things well at the various levels, if some DCEs had behaved well and had been on top, being at the service of the people when they were needed, I don’t think we will lose some of the seats especially in the Greater Accra Region and other parts of the country,” he added.
