The triple travel trivia promotion closed at the weekend with a keenly-contested game of wits which ended with an all-male haul for the three slots of all-expense-paid trips to international holiday destinations.

Shoppers Jacob Acquah, a staff of the Mechanical Workshop (Cinema Section) of the Ministry of Information, Kingsley Kusi Asomah, an aluminium technician at Kenab Glazing Limited and an unemployed youngster, Sylvester Siaw Ansah, shrugged off stiff opposition from fellow shoppers to emerge respective winners of the coveted holiday tickets.

The ‘Triple Travel Trivia’ campaign was launched by Accra’s leading malls, West Hills Mall, Achimota Mall and Accra Mall on February 5 to infuse some excitement into the shopping experience at the malls and reward shoppers for their loyalty.

Achimota Mall

The trivia was open to the respective patrons of the three malls who shopped to the tune of Ghc 300.00 during the promo period. But to grab the slot for the vacation abroad, qualified shoppers from each of the malls had to slug it out with nine other finalists.

In the final trivia which took place at the weekend, 30 finalists chased tickets for lush holiday destinations in Dubai, Mauritius and Cape Town. The ultimate prize comprised roundtrip tickets for the winners as well as their partners, accommodation and destination tours and spending money of US$2,000 per winner for a stay of five days and four nights at the destination.

Jacob Acquah, a West Hills Mall shopper and winner of the ticket for the holiday in Dubai heaved a huge sigh of relief after moderator, Trigmatic, announced the final score in his favour. He had just survived a hot chase by the only female contestant, Davida Kenny.

“I shop here all the time; two years ago, I narrowly missed winning a car. I was not as lucky as I am today and I had to contend with top-up credits.  Today, I am the winner!’’ an emotional Acquah said as he clutched on to his dummy ticket and waved at the audience.

He said he would travel to Dubai with his wife, Gloria, but he could not determine exactly when they would travel because his wife is still nursing their little baby.

At Achimota Mall, an overjoyed Kingsley Kusi Asomah, 33, said after he was declared winner, that he would travel to Cape Town with his wife, Beatrice, in June.

“This is a clear act of God. I have never travelled abroad in my life; my wife goes on leave in June so we will both fly to Cape Town and enjoy the fun together,” he said.

Accra Mall’s winner, 24-year-old Sylvester Siaw Ansah, single and unemployed said he’s in a fix as to who to take with him on his vacation to Mauritius.

“I’m still thinking…I am single. I wanted to go with my mom but she’ll be working so I will have to take a decision on who to go to Mauritius with,” he said.

All three winners have up until December 2018 to take their vacations.

In a congratulatory message to the winners, Jonathan Lotter, Asset Manager for AttAfrica Ghana Portfolio told the press later that he was happy with the level of interest shown in the promotion by respective customers and patrons of the three malls.

Lotter said West Hills Mall, Achimota Mall and Accra Mall highly cherished the patronage and loyalty of their respective shoppers and reminded all patrons that the essence of such generous promotions is to underscore the premium we place on customers as valuable stakeholders.

“For your preference of our malls and your loyalty, you can be sure that the managements of West Hills Mall, Achimota Retail Centre and Accra Mall will continue to cater for your comfort and convenience at our centres and spice up your shopping experiences with such high-value promotions,” he said.

Thirty shoppers have qualified for the much-anticipated finals of the ‘Triple Travel Trivia’ promotion in which three emerging winners will grab slots for all-expense-paid trips to three sensational holiday destinations around the world.

Accra’s three leading shopping malls, West Hills Mall, Accra Mall and Achimota Retail Centre, jointly launched the ‘Triple Travel Trivia’ a month ago as a loyalty reward promo for their shoppers and also to infuse some excitement into the respective shopping experience at the malls.

The winning shopper in the West Hills Mall trivia will earn a holiday trip to Dubai, while the winners at Accra Mall and Achimota Mall fly to holiday destinations in Mauritius and Cape Town respectively. All three holiday slots have been pre-packaged to allow winners to travel with their partner, both of whom will be fully covered by the prize, comprising all-expense-paid flights, destination tours and accommodation, in addition to US$ 2,000 spending money for a stay of five days and four nights at the destination. Entries for the promo closed at all the malls last Wednesday, March 14, and the final trivia game is set to take place separately at each of the three malls on Friday, 23, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March.

The trivia is open to shoppers who, over the promo period, spent a minimum of Ghc300 at any shop or a number of shops at West Hills Mall, Accra Mall or Achimota Mall respectively. Shoppers’ entry slips are filled out  with their personal and shopping information and dropped into an Entry Box for a public draw by the National Gaming Commission to shortlist 30 finalists – ten from each mall.

Mr. Victor Adu Amankwa MIS Manager at the National Gaming Commission disclosed, after he led a team to conduct three separate draws to select 10 finalists for each of the three malls, that over 3,400 shoppers took part in the Triple Travel Trivia promo.

Once an entry was picked electronically from among the lot, an official of the Gaming Commission would instantly and publicly dial the shopper’s given phone number to inform them about their selection among the last 10 for the final Trivia and about how close they are to winning a free holiday trip abroad.

Mr. Jonathan Lotter, Asset Manager for AttAfrica Ghana Portfolio, said, “because the prizes at stake are of very high value (all-expense-paid trips to three dreamland destinations), credibility and fair play are critical, and that’s why I’m particularly happy that these draws to select the 30 finalists were conducted by the National Gaming Commission itself.”

Mr. Michael Konadu, Marketing Manager for West Hills Mall, explained that each of the three malls will host its own final trivia game night on either March 23, 24 and 25 respectively at which the qualifying shoppers will compete to grab one of the three holiday slots.

Central Cape Town

‘Now that we know the challengers for all three trivia showdowns, let’s all brace ourselves for thrilling encounters with our participant shoppers and see who get to win these enticing summer holiday prizes,” said Mr. Konadu.

He said the final trivia games have been planned to be exceptionally recreational for all and each final event at all three malls would be moderated by Trigmatic, a celebrated Ghanaian musician and popular host on ‘Y’FM.

The capital’s three leading malls; West Hills Mall, Accra Mall and Achimota Retail Centre, have jointly unveiled an unprecedented holiday promotion which will sponsor lucky shoppers and their partners on all-expenses-paid trips to dreamland destinations in Dubai, Mauritius and Cape Town.

The ‘Triple Travel Trivia’ is a shopper reward and loyalty promotion which opened at all three malls respectively on February 5 and is running till March 14, 2018, when three shoppers will finally grab the slots for trips to three sensational holiday destinations.

The winning shopper in the West Hills Mall Trivia will fly to Dubai, while winners at Accra Mall and the Achimota Retail Centre will be hosted in Mauritius and Cape Town respectively.

All three holiday slots have been pre-packaged to allow winners to travel with their partner, with both beneficiaries on each trip fully covered by the prize, comprising all-expenses-paid flights, destination tours and accommodation, in addition to US$ 2,000 spending money for a stay of five days and four nights at the destination.

Of the destinations, Dubai is the largest and most populous city in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) and has emerged as a global city and a major business hub for the entire Middle East. The city’s main revenue now flows from tourism, aviation, real estate and financial services.

Central Cape Town

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean some 2,000 kilometres off the southeastern coast of the African continent. The island is highly-ranked for economic and political freedom and has a Human Development Index rated as the highest in Africa. Mauritius is particularly known for its lush holiday resorts and its varied flora and fauna, with many species endemic to the island.

Cape Town, on the other hand, is a coastal city in South Africa and is the second most populous urban area in the country after Johannesburg. It houses the Parliament of South Africa and is also the capital and primate city of the Western Cape Province. The city is famous for its harbour, for its natural setting in the Cape Floristic Region and for such well-known landmarks as the Table Mountain and Cape Point.

To win any of the three holiday slots, shoppers will have to spend a minimum of Ghc 300 at any shop or a number of shops at West Hills Mall, Accra Mall or Achimota Mall respectively to be entitled to an entry slip which will be filled out and dropped into an Entry Box for a final draw on March 19 by the National Gaming Commission to select shoppers for the final trivia game.

The Dubai Marina Apartments

“This triple holiday offer to our respective customers is as exceptional as it is unprecedented in the history of Ghana’s retail sector. With an enticing prize of an all-expense-paid and fun-filled holiday to three world-class destinations, it is obvious that the final trivia game which will produce the three lucky winners would generate lots of thrills and excitement for all of us,” said Jonathan Lotter, Asset Manager for the Malls.

Michael Konadu, Marketing Manager at West Hills Mall explained that each of the three malls will host a separate final trivia game night at which qualifying shoppers will compete for the chance to win the offer on March 23, 24 and 25 of March respectively.

‘All three final trivia games will be moderated by YFM’s popular host and Ghanaian musician Trigmatic and the questions will be simple and mundane, relating mostly to the holiday destinations and a bit of current affairs,’ Konadu disclosed.

The management of Accra Mall Limited has confirmed the payment of Ghc2.3 million, being an outstanding 2014/2015 VAT liability, to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) following deliberations with revenue officials who visited the mall premises yesterday.

A statement issued this afternoon by Hannatje Ludick, the asset manager for the mall, discloses that prior to the payment the management of Accra Mall and senior officials of GRA had made considerable progress in engagements regarding the settlement of the outstanding tax liability and the mall had proceeded to initiate the due processes required for payment of the outstanding liability.

The management of Accra Mall was therefore surprised that a GRA task force arrived at the facility yesterday morning, ostensibly to enforce payment, in spite of progress made in ongoing discussions on the subject.

Accra Mall accordingly paid an amount of Ghc2,306,625.90 to GRA through a banker’s draft yesterday morning.

Following this development, the management wishes to affirm that Accra Mall Limited has always been and would remain a responsible, compliant and law-abiding corporate player on the country’s business landscape and would not, in any way, deliberately flout the payment of any tax or any other regulatory requirement.

In fact, the management of Accra Mall has taken the lead in keeping open the communication channels with the GRA, as there was uncertainty around transition rules regarding payments received in advance in the VAT Act enacted in 2014. Since then management has been engaged in constructive discussions with the Authority around the implementation of the VAT Act.

It is worthy of note that Accra Mall ranks high among the crop of businesses in Ghana that are prompt and flawless in the payment of their tax liabilities, such as the PAYE, withholding tax and VAT, and has consistently ensured payment of these up to October 2017.

The Mall assured its tenants and patrons that it will continue to provide the best environment needed for business and modern one-stop shopping and sustain Accra Mall’s status not just as Ghana’s premier mall but also the country’s most preferred destination for shopping and business.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old suspect in connection with the false terrorist attack alert at the Accra Mall.

His arrest is the outcome of an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

“The suspect was arrested in his hideout at Offinso in the Ashanti Region on 1st November, 2017, and is currently assisting Police in investigations,” according to a statement from the police.

[contextly_sidebar id=”3neootwiFm9mTqty7OaG6jO5EwQz9efx”]The police assured that, it has “the capacity to fish out persons who circulate false news on social media and other platforms in relation to issues that can have national security implications.”

Ghana’s Criminal Code states that, the circulation of any statement, rumor or report which is likely to cause fear and alarm to the public or disturb public peace is a misdemeanor.

On September 24, 2017, there were reports on social media about a supposed terror attack at the Accra Mall circulating on social media, and causing fear and panic and marring business activities at the mall.

The police were able to single out Whatsapp as the medium on which the fake message emanated.

Early on, the police noted that, the use of Whatsapp was making difficult for the Cyber Crime Unit to trace the person behind the hoax.

The Ghana Police Service has dismissed rumours of a supposed terror attack on Accra mall.

According to the police there were reports on social media that the incident occurred at the mall on Sunday.

“The Police this [Sunday] afternoon monitored information on social media that a group of terrorist had attacked the Accra mall. The police on receiving the information conducted a security checks on the mall and found the information to be false,” a statement from the police and sighed by Director-General of the Public Affairs Unit, Assistant Commissioner of Police, David E. Eklu added.

[contextly_sidebar id=”5lrypEssm6ABAKfkcSXamNIzkfDaABll”]The police in the statement further cautioned persons behind such false information to desist from it “since it has serious implications for the security of the whole country.

The police further assured that it is investigating to identify those behind the false information “for necessary action to be taken.”

Canada, UK issues terror attack alert in Ghana
The false terror report comes on the back of a terror alert the Canadian government issued to its citizens traveling to Ghana in August 2017.

“There is a threat of terrorism. Terrorist targets could include shopping malls, government buildings, public areas such as bars, restaurants, hotels and sites frequented by Westerners. Be aware of your surroundings in public places,” a notice posted by the Canadian government added.

The United Kingdom also in August added to Ghana’s terrorism concerns with travel advice on its website indicating that “terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Ghana.”

“While there have been no recent attacks in Ghana, terrorist groups in west Africa have demonstrated their capability and intent by mounting attacks in 2015 and 2016 in Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Mali, targeting beach resorts, hotels, cafes and restaurants visited by foreigners,” UK stated on its website.

Security services in Ghana in April 2016 warned of such terror attacks on the country but later said enough measures had been put in place to avert terrorism.

Scores of squatters, hawkers and traders were on Thursday ejected from walkways around the Accra Mall during a demolition exercise organised by the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA).

A team of police officers and LaDMA officials pulled down or turned upside down unauthorised structures such as kiosks, makeshift stalls and other wooden structures used by the squatters and traders.

Led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs Gladys Mann-Dedey and the La District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Oduro Amaning, the demolition exercise started around 4 am. when most of the traders were yet to turn up for business.

By 6 am when they turned up, their structures could not be found.

Illegal businesses
Lately, the walkways beneath the ‘Spanner junction’ overhead footbridge right to the lorry park adjacent the Accra Mall have become a booming market, where all sorts of trading activities take place.

The area has also become a hotspot for begging activities, especially by children who harass people who use that route for money while their parents look on.

Mrs Mann-Dedey told journalists that the exercise became necessary after the traders and squatters failed to relocate to the lorry park, in spite of consistent warnings from the assembly.

The activities, she said, were illegal and an obstruction to people who use the walkways.

“We have asked them to relocate to the lorry park, but they have refused to go. The assembly gave them 21 days to relocate and the deadline expired about three weeks ago. We followed it up with many announcements, but they still refused to relocate,” she explained.

She described the mini market around the walkway as a “disgrace’’ and an indictment on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

“The President wants Accra to be the cleanest city in Africa and we must work hard to make that vision a reality. The assembly is not destroying their business; we are just telling them to move to the lorry park to conduct their activities in accordance with law,” she said.

Reservations
Some of the affected traders and squatters who spoke to the Daily Graphic expressed reservation about the demolition.

A T-Shirt seller, Mr George Adiku, said the exercise would have an adverse effect on their businesses.

He appealed to LadMA to institute measures that would allow the traders to conduct their business on the walkways until 10 a.m. every day.

A phone accessories dealer, Mr Kwesi Opoku, said the traders were prevented from relocating to the lorry park by some people.

“We wanted to move there but someone who claims to be the landowner of the park prevented us from moving there to engage in our trading activities,” he said.
