GCB Bank has commissioned a state-of-the-art Renal Dialysis Unit at the 37 Military Hospital.

The new dialysis unit, which was fully sponsored by GCB Bank Limited at a total cost of USD 232,000, comprises six dialysis machines, two ultrasound machines and a water purification plant, amongst other things.

The Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, Brigadier General Michael Akwasi Yeboah-Agyapong, expressed his profound gratitude to the commercial bank.

“Even though dialysis started in the 1940’s, efforts to establish one in our hospital started in 2007. Several attempts were made to establish the unit but financial and administrative bottlenecks made it impossible. The burning desire to own one, however, led us to go round asking for support from individuals and corporate bodies. I wish to gladly state that the positive response we received from GCB Bank Limited is the reason why we are here celebrating this special occasion,” he said.

Brigadier General Yeboah-Agyapong further stated that the benevolence of GCB Bank Limited couldn’t have come at a better time as the dialysis unit will help reduce the number of deaths caused by end-stage Kidney Disease.

“For the records, I wish to state that the first patient was treated on the 14th of February, 2018 and since then, we’ve had a number of patients who are queuing even before the commissioning. The facility has already accumulated 32 sessions. There is no doubt that we are fired up for action, it is clear that our work is cut out for use and our patients can no longer wait for formal commissioning,” he added.

The Managing Director of GCB Bank Limited, Anselm Ray Sowah, in his address at the ceremony to commission and officially hand over the unit to the hospital, was grateful for the opportunity given by the hospital to make a relevant contribution to society.

“Today represents an important milestone to the delivery of renal services in Ghana. One more renal unit means one more avenue of respite for the great number of our relations who have kidney-related problems and require this service. Our relationship with the 37 Military Hospital as a strategic national asset dates back many years with a lot of collaborations between our two institutions. … It is therefore not surprising that we decided to fully sponsor the Renal Dialysis Unit of the 37 Military Hospital when the command made the request to procure a  modern dialysis machine at a total cost of around USD 232,000” he said.

Anselm Ray Sowah further praised the 37 Military Hospital for its efficient and reliable service to personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and the general public.

“We applaud the dedication and commitment of your staff. You will all agree with me that we have all benefitted in one way or the other from their selfless determination to serve even in the face of many challenges. We [GCB Bank Limited] shall continue to associate ourselves with this unique institution and partner the military high command. We do believe that this new unit will enhance the level of care provided to patients on dialysis and also promote a renewed enthusiasm amongst the staff,” he said.

Going paperless

This is a further boost to access to healthcare at the 37 Military Hospital as the facility has begun running a paperless system.

This is according to the Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, Brigadier General Michael Akwasi Yeboah-Agyapong.

Speaking at the commissioning, he said, “…our hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, is fully paperless. That is, if you come to the hospital, you don’t hold any paper. You’ll see your doctor. You don’t need a prescription; you’ll go the pharmacy and take your medication.”

The 37 Military Hospital is migrating to a paperless regime to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare.

The management of the facility is optimistic that the move will also reduce the stress its clients go through in their quest to seek healthcare.

The Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, Brigadier General Michael Akwasi Yeboah-Agyapong, who made this known at the commissioning of an ultra-modern dialysis centre for the hospital by GBC Bank Limited, said the facility had put in place a system to allow for paperless transactions between patients, doctors and pharmacists.

“Our hospital is fully paperless. If you come to the hospital, you don’t hold any paper. You will see your doctor, you don’t need a prescription, you just go to the pharmacy and you take your medication,” he said.

While a few institutions in the country are migrating to a paperless regime to ensure efficient service delivery, many are yet to adopt the system despite the proof of its efficiency.

Most government institutions including the judiciary and health facilities still rely heavily on paper in undertaking their services.

Although there have been past instances of arson to destroy paper-recorded information or evidence, the approach towards going paperless has not been much embraced in the country.

‘Paperless at the port’

The government began the implementation of its promised paperless clearing system at the Tema port in September  2017, to speed up the process of clearing goods from two weeks to four hours, and ensure order at the port, whilst blocking revenue leakages.

‘About the dialysis unit project’

The GCB-sponsored Renal Dialysis Unit was built at a cost of $232,000 to deliver Kidney related services.

It consists of six dialysis machines, two ultrasound machines, defibrillators with monitors and printers, a water purification plant amongst others.

The Unit is co-located with the Intensive Care Unit and has the capacity for expansion.

Brig. Gen Yeboah-Agyapong noted that some staff of the hospital have been made to undergo refresher courses to enable them to use the equipment.

He added that due to the many cases of people who need various kidney-related services, the hospital decided to commence using the facility even before its formal opening.

He said the facility has even before it’s outdooring, attended to a total of seven cases with an accumulated total of 32 sessions.

Chief Executive Officer of Despite Group of Companies, Osei Kwame Despite, on Friday handed over an ultra-modern Child Oncology and Physiotherapy Unit to the 37 Military Hospital at a ceremony in Accra.

The multi-million cedi Unit comprises of two consulting rooms, a Gymnasium, Playroom, a kitchen and five washrooms, among other things.

The commissioning of the Unit coincided with the Birthday of Osei Kwame.

[contextly_sidebar id=”pb1oSmnieNPsdb1aUTI2cd58M0QlZ2gA”]Speaking at the ceremony, Rear Admiral Peter Kofi Faidoo, Chief of Naval Staff, noted that, the completion of the unit could not have come at a better time because issues relating to children’s health care remain a major area of concern to many hospitals due to the limited capacity and the 37 Military Hospital was no exception.

Rear Admiral Faidoo, who was the special guest, said it had always been the desire of the 37 Military Hospital to have a dedicated Child Oncology and Physiotherapy Unit.

“The coming into fruition of this unit makes today a special day indeed,” he added.

According to him, the core reason for the establishment of the Military Hospital was to take care of the medical needs of the Ghana Armed Forces personnel, but over the years, it had had its role expanded.

He said the hospital, which has been a front-runner during national disasters and mass casualties of road traffic accidents, has distinguished itself in the face of logistics challenges.

Rear Admiral Faidoo noted that, the project would not have been possible without the philanthropic and charitable spirit of Dr Osei Kwame.

“I therefore take this opportunity to congratulate and commend the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Despite Group of companies for a job well executed and thank you for the kind gesture,” he said.

He expressed the hope that the philanthropic work of the CEO would encourage and inspire individuals and organisations to support the 37 Military Hospital in other areas of need.

On behalf of the staff of the Hospital, Rear Admiral Faidoo pledged to take care of the building and its facilities to ensure that it served its purpose effectively and efficiently.

Brigadier General Michael Akwasi Yeboah Agyapong, Commandant of the 37 Military Hospital said the hospital was poised to provide 24 hour service daily to its clients with the right human resource and infrastructure.

Brig. Gen. Agyapong said although there were no readily available data on cancer cases, cancer continue to be the major cause of deaths among children.

According to him, cancer cases were also increasing, especially those relating to bone, tumour and blood.

He recounted that the 37 Military Hospital for the past 75 years of existence did not have a dedicated Oncology and Physiotherapy Unit, adding that, the establishment of the unit is a blessing.

Mr Kwame Sefa-Kayi of Despite Group of Companies, who spoke on behalf of Dr Osei Kwame, said children represents the future of a country hence the need to give them maximum care.

According to Mr Sefa-Kayi, the establishment of the unit followed a routine check by Dr Osei Kwame at the Unit in 2015.

He said the Despite Group of Companies would be handing over two Police Posts to the Ghana Police Service in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Region very soon.

The 37 Military Hospital presented a plague to Dr Osei Kwame in appreciation of his contribution. The ceremony was also attended by popular actors and actress in the country.

The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors today [Friday] donated an amount of GHc 50,000 to the Burns Unit of the 37 Military Hospitals in Accra, Ghana.

The Chamber’s CEO, Senyo Hosi, noted that “the unit is a very critical one, both for our industry and the citizenry” hence the need for the unit to be well resourced to help support its patients.

Receiving the cheque donation on behalf of the burns unit of the hospital, the Brigadier General M.A. Yeboah Agyapong expressed the hospital’s gratitude to the chamber.

He affirmed that the donation was very much needed to cater for victims of various explosions in the country, including victims from the June 3 fire and flood disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle who are still receiving treatment at the unit.

Brigadier General Yeboah Agyapong also used the opportunity to call on the general public to extend a helping hand to the unit to enable them effectively cater for victims of burns.

The Chamber in 2016, also donated to the unit following a gas explosion at La.

Management of the 37 Military Hospital has confirmed that ten out of the 54 persons who escaped the gas explosion at Atomic Junction with varying degrees of injury, are still being treated at the hospital a month after the incident.

Seven people were confirmed dead in the blast, whilst 132 people sustained varying degrees of injury.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SawPO0u0MHFJr5wZAykPfZRaYnTIOA9t”]The residents of Atomic Junction in Madina were thrown into a state of panic following the explosion at the gas station which spread to adjacent structures.

The huge fireball from the explosion could be seen for miles around with many people in the vicinity taking to their heels in a bid to escape the blaze.

A number of people who sustained injuries in the blaze and the ensuing panic, were taken to the surrounding hospitals to receive treatment.

According to the Administrative Medical Officer at the 37 Military Hospital, Major R.O Mintah, 54 persons were taken to the 37 Military Hospital and out of that number, 44 have since been discharged.

He however added that, the ones who have been discharged routinely return to the hospital for check-ups.

“We had 54 of them initially that we attended to. Up until today, we’ve discharged all of them except ten who are still in our care. Those who were in ICU are still there, but they’ll be coming out soon. There are eight burn cases in the normal ward, and we have some who have orthopedic cases who have been to the theatre for surgery,” he said.

“There are lots of improvements. Burns cases take a long time to treat for discharge, so the costs are being managed by the hospitals and donations from a few organisations. Those who have been discharged have not been totally weaned off the hospital because some still come for OPD follow-ups.”

‘Thinking about the fire gives me trauma’

Several people were also taken to the Legon hospital for treatment and earlier narrated their ordeal to Citi News’ Michael Ogbodu.

Many of them were in bandages, whilst others had slings around their broken arms with expressions of discomfort written all over their faces.

“My whole body is paining me, and I’m in a trauma from thinking that the fire would have burnt me to ashes. I was at Baritas Restaurant with a couple of my friends and we were eight in number. The first explosion happened, but without fire; it just came with some smoke,” she said.

“We were told to come out so we were running helter-skelter. I couldn’t run far before the (explosion) with the fire, so I thought I was almost gone, but God being so good, I was able to run to safety. I fell while I was running and bruised my knee. I came for dressing today [Monday], and I was crying in the process.”

An Accra District Court has ordered pathologist Lawrence Adusei and head of the Pathology Department of the 37 Military Hospital, to appear before it to explain their failure to release the postmortem report of the murdered military officer, Major Maxwell Mahama.

The order followed an application by state prosecutors asking for the release of the postmortem report.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ve5eZv6mhXCnTzrDgr15m1C6N3UAcYXl”]According to the lead prosecutor, DSP George Amega, they have been chasing the report from the medical officer since investigations  commenced but they have not been successful.

Major Mahama, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, was said to have been on his daily jogging route on May 29, 2017, when some residents of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region, attacked and lynched  him on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

Over 50 suspects, some of whom had fled the community to other regions in the country, were later arrested in connection with the gruesome killing that shook the nation.

The late army officer was laid to rest on June 9, 2017, with full State and army honors.

25 persons are currently facing prosecution for their role in the killing. The suspects have been charged with murder.

The magistrate, Ebenezer Kwaku Ansah, adjourned the case to the 26th of October 2017.

The 37 Military Hospital will tomorrow, Thursday, fumigate the Medical Emergency Unit of the facility.

According to the hospital, the unit will be shut down from August 17, 2017 to enable them carry out the routine exercise.

[contextly_sidebar id=”yECPvHQ4WJBeHSewyIOBe03oh5qE0FiQ”]A statement signed by the Deputy Director for Public Relations at the hospital, Commander MA Larbi said hospital will be opened for normal operations and OPD services from Monday, August 21, 2017.

The statement also urged the Public to co-operate with them during the four day fumigation exercise.

“The 37 Military Hospital will conduct a routine fumigation exercise at the Medical Emergency Unit, from Thursday 17th August to Sunday 20th August, 2017. During the period, the unit will be shut down and not opened to the public. It will however be opened for normal operations and OPD services from Monday, 21st August, 2017.”

“The public is kindly advised to take note and cooperate with hospital staff for a smooth fumigation exercise during the four day period,” the statement added.

A similar exercise was undertaken by the Police hospital in Accra in February 2017.

The exercise was carried out at the peadiatric and out patient units.

Fumigation is a process of gaseous sterilisation which is used for killing micro-organisms and prevention of microbial growth in air, surface of wall or floor.

It is generally used in the pharmaceuticals, operation theatres, hospitals, hotels and offices and wherever required.

Due to the activities that take place at hospitals fumigation is essential for suffocating or poisoning microbes or pests that might have occupied such spaces.

Prof. Stephane Gentil, a Plastic Surgeon from France, on Tuesday donated two incubators and a radiant warmer valued at 55,000 dollars to the 37 Military Hospital Maternity Ward to help take care of premature babies.

Prof Gentil said the gesture would supplement the logistical needs of the maternity and help increase the chance of survival of premature babies.

He said he was touched by the condition of babies in the maternity when he visited the hospital some years ago with his wife hence the donation of the incubators to enhance service delivery as the ward kept growing and the number of admissions kept soaring.

Prof. Gentil said it had been 10 years since he started practising as a plastic surgeon and would want to help babies and poor people who needed help in Ghana, Togo and Africa as a whole.

Brigadier General Ernest Cosby Saka Jnr, the Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, expressed gratitude to the Prof. Gentil for the gesture shown the hospital to help save premature babies.

He said individuals and institutions saw the 37 Military Hospital as one without challenges.

However, he said, the hospital was equally faced with challenges just like any other institution and appealed to corporate and other organisations to help it perform effectively.

Brig. Gen. Saka Jnr said the 37 Military Hospital was a national asset and, therefore, there was the need for the hospital to be supported to be up to standard.

“All our machines are old and need retooling and replacement to keep the place vibrant to deliver as it should,” he said.

He said there were no available accommodation for staff and hostels to house family members who travelled from long distances to accompany patients, adding that the hospital was planning to put up a hostel to address that problem.

Brig. Gen Saka, thus, called on government and stakeholders to come to their aid.

A sod cutting ceremony to start work on a three-storey classroom block has been marked at the 37 Military Hospital Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC) in Accra.

Major General Sampson Adeti, Chief of Staff, General Headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and Brigadier General Ralph Kodjo Ametepi, Director General of GAF Medical Services jointly cut the sod.

The project funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund, would house an ultra-modern library, a state of the art laboratory and a hall.

Addressing the gathering, Major General Adeti noted that the ceremony marked a milestone in the life of the NMTC since its establishment in July 1947.

According to him the College since its first accreditation in November 2003, had not relented in its efforts to ensure the provision of high standard training.

“The College has the eagle eye and commitment to be the best Military nursing training institution along the West African sub region.”

Major General Adeti said the Military High Command was determined not to restrict training offered in the College to only Military personnel but widen it to include civilians as well.

He therefore commended the College for contributing to providing a reliable breed of professionals who could be found in almost all health facilities across the country and abroad.

Major General Adeti said discipline and professional training of the NMTC made the College the preferred choice.

He said it was sad that reasonable number of qualified applicants were turned away annually as a result of inadequate infrastructure.

“I would like to assure you all that the completion of this project, many more applicants would be catered for and the College’s profile would be raised,” he added.

He therefore charged the contractor to hand over the project within the stipulated period.

Colonel Sally Mensah, Principal, NMTC, said the college aimed to be a degree awarding institution by early next year and commence with a master’s programme.

She said: “The College is also looking forward to having exchange programme with other military nursing institutions outside the country.

“The College wishes to maintain and even do better in line of its discipline, effective nursing skills and good attitudes towards clients in the country and United Nations Operations.”

She urged corporate bodies and institutions to assist the College to put up hostel facility, an alumni house, volley and basketball pitches.

The project which is expected to be completed within a year would be executed by M/S Assumadu Construction Works Limited.
