Ghana’s Black Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Egypt in their final World Cup qualifier at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Ghana dominated the early stages of the game and went close from distance on a couple of occasions through Mubarak Wakaso and debutant Nana Opoku Ampomah.

Both teams were dealt first-half injury blows as Nana Opoku Ampomah for Ghana and Pharoah’s defender Ramy Rabia were stretchered off.

Ghana had a strong penalty shout on the 20th-minute mark when Raphael Dwamenna seemed to have been tripped by Egypt goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy, but the referee waved away the appeals.

The Black Stars continued to push and were denied twice on the stroke of half-time by Ekramy.

Egypt begun the second half stronger and went close straight after the restart through Shikabala, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Richard Ofori.

Ofori was called upon again a minute later to deny Ali Gabr from close range.

Raphael Dwamena then had a golden opportunity to give Ghana the lead, but he shot wide from 6 yards from a Lumor Agbenyenu cross.

The Egyptians soon punished Ghana’s wastefulness when Shikabala fired home from inside the box after a wonderful cross from Mahmoud Hassan ‘Trezeguet’ on the 60th-minute mark.

The goal seemed to wake the sleeping Black Stars who responded almost immediately through Edwin Gyasi after his shot from outside the box was deflected in off Egypt’s Ali Gabr.

The Black Stars had some good opportunities to grab the winning goal first, through Patrick Twumasi, who headed over the bar from point-blank range, and from substitute Richmond Boakye Yiadom, whose shot on the turn was saved brilliantly by Ekramy.

The result means the Black Stars failed to register a home win throughout the qualification campaign and finished 3rd with 7 points behind eventual group winners, Egypt, and Uganda.

Honduras and Australia played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their intercontinental World Cup play-off.

The Socceroos – who will probably be happier with their home leg to come – had the better chances in San Pedro Sula.

They were initially awarded a penalty for a foul on Bailey Wright, but the referee then changed his mind and awarded a free-kick to Honduras.

Luzern striker Tomi Juric had their best opportunities.

In the first half, an excellent touch took him past the defence before he fired just wide from 16 yards. And after the break, his header was tipped over the bar by Donis Escober.

Carlo Costly had a late chance for Honduras, but Brighton keeper Mat Ryan denied the 35-year-old.

The second leg will be played at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium at 09:00 GMT on Wednesday – with the winners qualifying for the World Cup.

Australia will be hoping that Tim Cahill – who scored twice in the Asian play-off win over Syria – will recover from an ankle injury in time.

Honduras – who finished fourth in North, Central American and Caribbean qualifying, above the eliminated United States – are aiming to reach a third consecutive World Cup.

Egypt Head Coach Hector Cuper has left out Liverpool forward Mohammed Salah in his final 25-man squad to face Ghana in their final FIFA World Cup qualifier in November.

The Pharaohs who have already secured qualification to their first World Cup in 27 years will be without Salah who has been their lead marksman throughout the qualifying rounds.

The 25-year-old forward was left out of the squad to avoid fatigue according to Cuper.

The Egyptian squad, however, included premier league duo Ahmed Hegazi and Ramadan Sobhi as well as 44-year old goalkeeper and captain Essam El-Hadary.

Egypt defeated the Black Stars 2-0 in the first leg in Alexandria back in November 2016.

Black Stars 1st assistant coach, Ibrahim Tanko, says the final 2018 World Cup qualifier against Egypt on November 12 is another leg of the rebuilding process started by head coach Kwesi Appiah.

On his appointment in May, Kwesi Appiah stated that he was going to form a new team for the future and that, all the matches in the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 African Nations Cup would serve as tools to help him create a formidable team that would challenge for titles on the continent.

With the 2018 World Cup ticket in the pocket of the Egyptians, Ghana has nothing to play for on paper.

However, Tanko, in an interview with journalists, said he saw the match as another opportunity to test the team and see what some new players had to offer.

“We are building a team as we have always said and so, we are going to try some new players. The game is on November 12 and we will some observe new faces and then, see what outcome we get against Egypt.”

The likes of Nasiru Mohammed of BK Hacken in Sweden and Nana Opoku Ampomah of Belgian side, Waasland-Beveren, have been given first-time call-ups while Kasim Nuhu returns after he was called up for the first time when Ghana played Uganda and Saudi Arabia in October.

Nuhu scored in the 3-0 win over Saudi Arabia in an international friendly on October.

Regulars like Asamoah Gyan and Mubarak Wakaso have also been called back for the match against Egypt which will be played in Cape Coast.

The Ghana Football Association has officially said that it has not involved itself in inducing match referees for World Cup qualifiers on the continent.

The comment follows the declarations made by the Vice-Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Wilfried Osei, on Citi FM’s “Sports Panorama” that the non-payment of unclassified payments cost Ghana a place in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Osei explained that the unclassified payments were used for several things including getting referees and match officials to handle Ghana’s matches fairly in the qualifiers.

He stated that such inducement was commonplace on the continent since other countries did same to influence important results in the quest to qualify for the World Cup finals.

However, Ibrahim Saane Daara, spokesperson of the Ghana Football Association, said in an interview on Happy FM on Wednesday that the GFA had never been involved in inducing referees.

“We, as a football association, do not believe in inducement and we have never been involved in bribery. We have never done such a thing before.”

“When a referee is appointed for a match, by default, you expect him to be fair. That is a given.  If and when we do have issues with a referee, there are ways we can proceed. One of such means was the recent protest we filed against South African referee Daniel Bennett. CAF has modalities to deal with referees who do not perform well and we are satisfied with them.”

Saane Daara went on to state that, unclassified payments were normally used for activities such as mobilizing supporters for the Black Stars matches and organise scouting and reconnaissance trips ahead of Black Stars matches.

He explained that these things were valuable and helped the team.

Ghana’s hopes of making a fourth consecutive World Cup suffered a blow when they were held to a goalless draw in Uganda.

The draw meant that Egpyt are now one win away from securing qualification to next year’s world cup, ending Ghana’s almost obligatory appearance at the World Cup.

[contextly_sidebar id=”46hR01NGYer9HGecgBCCBf1Fpk2gIEkC”]However, it wasn’t the Black Stars’ poor performance that attracted the ire of Ghanaians, following the game, but that of South African referee Daniel Bennett and his assistants.

Ghana had arguably two legitimate goals disallowed in each half, including one at the very end of the game, and had a strong penalty appeal waved away by the referee.

Amartey hit the back of the net with a powerful header in the first half, but had the goal ruled out for offside although replays suggested that he was onside.

Acheampong was then bundled over by a defender in the box for a penalty after the break, but the referee pointed for a goal-kick instead.

And right at the end of the game, substitute Raphael Dwamena put the ball in the back of the net for what he thought was Ghana’s winner only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.

That decision sparked a ruckus on the pitch as the Ghanaian players and coaches sought an explanation after the final whistle, seconds later, which has since, inevitably, spilt over onto social media.

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan called on the Ghana Football Association to protest the conduct of the officials in a tweet after the game.

Other Ghanaian football fans and football journalists across the continent also vented their spleen at the match officials, with some calling for the match to be replayed, as had been ruled in the game between Senegal and South Africa.

Here are some of the tweets in response to the refereeing calls in the game

Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia are all but over after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Uganda in Kampala in a game marred by poor refereeing decisions.

Saturday’s clash was billed as a make-or-break for the World Cup hopes for both sides, with Uganda two points behind Egypt and Ghana a further two back.

However, a number of missed chances from both sides and poor officiating meant neither side could find a breakthrough.

Ghana had two legitimate goals disallowed and had a strong penalty appeal waved away by the referee

The Pharaohs can now clinch a spot at next year’s World Cup with a win over Congo on Sunday, opening up an unassailable four-point lead at the top of the group.

With Ghana needing to win to stand any chance of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and with several key players missing, Kwesi Appiah went with a new look squad for today’s game.

4

Appiah handed an international debut to Malmo star Kingsley Sarfo while Richmond Boakye-Yiadom who’s been in stunning form for SuperLiga team Red Star Belgrade, started up front with captain Asamoah Gyan out with an injury.

Christian Atsu, Harrison Afful and Jonathan Mensah also missed the trip while Jordan and Andre Ayew were dropped from the squad.

Uganda who had beaten the Egyptians in Kampala before losing in Alexandria during the previous international break, started the game brightly.

7

Okwi was a livewire down the right for the Cranes asking a number of questions of the Ghanaian defence.

Despite the pressure from the Ugandans, it was Ghana who almost took the lead through Thomas Partey, who had scored four times in his last two games for Ghana.

Richard Ofori got a hand to a cross releasing his side on a counter that ended with Partey firing just wide.

6

The Black Stars had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside when Daniel Amartey, who captained the side, headed home from a free-kick, only for the linesman’s flag to go up.

It was the Black Stars who started the second half stronger but were unable to create any clear-cut chances.

Uganda should have taken the lead as a fantastic cross found the head of Nsibambi who headed wide from about five yards out.

They were almost made to rue that miss as Frank Acheampong was barged over in the Ugandan box in what looked like a clear penalty shout but the referee waved the appeals away.

Chances were few and far between for the rest of the game with both sides restricted to shots from range which barely threatened either keeper.

The Black Stars had the ball in the net again with seconds to play but the goal was ruled out, wrongly again, for offside sparking a fracas after the final which came almost immediately after.

Ghana will now face a nervous wait as Egypt host Congo on Sunday, where a draw will end the team’s chances of making it to Russia.

Black Stars and Red Star Belgrade forward, Richmond Boakye-Yiadom, has his eyes set on beating Uganda on Saturday in Kampala in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana is currently third in Group E on 5 points with Uganda on 7 and Egypt on 9 and only a victory for the Black Stars coupled with a win for Congo Brazzaville will give the team some hope for a place in the 2018 World Cup.

Boakye-Yiadom, who scored for Ghana in the 5-1 win Brazzaville in the last round, believes that he and his team-mates should go for the victory against Uganda despite the strong home record of their hosts and they should not think about the match between Egypt and Congo Brazzaville.

“I always believe Ghana is one of the most talented players when it comes to football and we always want to win and appear on the big stage. We are going for the victory against Uganda.

I believe that if God can take David from the bottom and make him King of Israel, then anything can happen so we just have to believe and focus on our match.”

The Black Stars team will have its last training session in Nairobi on Thursday before flying to Kampala.

The Black Stars Of Ghana kick started their Group E World Cup Qualifiers at the Tamale Stadium with boring and disappointing draw.

Citi Sports’ Rahman Osman was at Tamale Stadium and he shares 5 things he picked up from the game.

TERRIBLE PITCH

The Tamale pitch made it difficult for both teams to build attack through midfield. This is a World Cup qualifier and it ought to be treated a such.

This tournament brings the GFA so much money. I am wondering how they chose to gamble with it on an unplayable pitch.

The fixtures were drawn several months ago. If they harboured any thought of honoring this game in Tamale, they should have prepared the pitch long ago.

SELFISH ATTACKERS

With the pitch halting a fluid style of play, it was clear that a more coordinated effort from the players would give the needed result. However, the attackers put individual glory ahead of the collective.

There were moments when a player with the ball had two or three team mates in a better position but chose to shot shoot from  afar.
That was not going to get us anything and true to word, we gained no goals in the match.

AFFUL, BABA RAHMAN NEED COMPETITION

The two fullbacks, Harrison Afful and Baba Rahman have been enjoying a monopoly on the right and left side of the Blackstars defense ever since Avram Grant took over the team.

Jeffrey Schlupp was supposed to put Rahman on his toes but he has become a full time winger. The performance of the duo against Uganda was below their lofty standards.

Rahman especially struggled to deal with the pace and power of Nicholas Wadada on so many occasions. Offensively, Afful and Rahman were average too.

culpefqxgaav7kg

THE SET PIECE MOJO THE SERBS LEFT US IS GONE

The Black Stars, all of a sudden, became very good with set pieces during the era of two successive Serbia coaches. Even when the team is struggling they managed to literally ‘squeeze water from a rock’ with corner kicks or free kicks.

We can go back to the ‘one goal project’ era of Milovan Rajevac for that.

It continued when Akwesi Appiah took over especially in South Africa 2014 and the 2014 World Cup Qualifier with Wakaso Mubarak weighing in inch-perfect deliveries resulting in goals.

Since Avram Grant took over the set piece magic is dying.

Ghana had many free kicks at very advantageous positions but there were was no variations in the set plays.

All the kicks were direct no matter the player behind it and more surprisingly, there was no Ghanaian player in the wall to help create a shooting lane or become a marker for the kicker.

BAD CHANGES BY AVRAM GRANT

Frank Acheampong was troubling the Cranes with his direct play down the left flank. He even got the Ugandan fullback and winger into the referee’s book. Why sub him when Gyan was having a bad day at the office?

The change was inspired by reputation and not performance.

Schlupp, who came in for Acheampong, could not trouble the Cranes. It would have been better if Schlupp had came on for Baba Rahman to aid Acheampong by doubling up on the Cranes right sides.

Unfortunately, Avram Grant did not see things that way.

Injured Black Stars deputy skipper, Andre Ayew, Greece-based Mubarak Wakaso, and Germany-based Baba Rahman, have combined to buy almost a thousand tickets for kids in Tamale to watch the game against the Cranes of Uganda this afternoon.

Ghana will play the Cranes at the Tamale Sports Stadium in the opening group fixture of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers on Friday at 15:00 GMT.

The three players, who hail from northern Ghana, insist that they want to give the kids in the region a lifetime opportunity of watching a Black Stars game for the first time.

bobby

According to reports in Tamale, Ayew will arrive on Friday and has promised to purchase five thousand tickets while Wakaso and Baba Rahman will combine to buy another five thousand tickets.

The trio hail from the Northern part of the country and their actions will be seen as a huge act of generosity.

On Thursday, fans of the Black Stars in Tamale were complaining about  the high prices of tickets and this will come as a huge relief to them.

In recent times, national support for the Black Stars has dwindled drastically following a poor campaign at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which saw the players play poorly, after they had fought for bonuses, forcing the government to airlift three million dollars to Brazil.
