A Naval delegation from the United States of America are currently at the Sekondi Naval base to train the Marine Unit of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Navy on new ways of fighting crime on Ghana’s waters.
The United States fleet’s Forces Commander, Mark Lederer led the delegation to pay a courtesy call on the paramount chief of the Essikado Traditional area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V at his palace.
Speaking to Citi News, Commander Lederer said there is the need for supervision on Ghana’s waters following the growing trend of traffic in arms and illicit drugs.
He stated that the training will enable Ghana’s Navy prepare for operations at sea “so basically looking at vessels that may be illegally fishing in either Ghanaian territorial waters or exclusive economic zone…They will also learn “different tactics, different procedures…”
Nana Kobina Nketsiah V, on his part stressed on the need to increase security on Ghana’s waters after the discovery of oil in the Western Coast of Ghana.
“There is a time I used to say that when you have a property, the first thing you need to do is to secure the property but then we had oil in the see and it wasn’t secured because we didn’t have the military tool to guard the thing,” he said.
He expressed the hope that the ongoing training will help Ghana secure its waters and protect its assets and people.
