The three Members of Parliament (MPs) for the Okaikwei North, South and Central constituencies are pushing for the creation of a new Municipality from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CxAVI7yXBkXSVwyt6j2XmUMYe83VKJxz”]The MPs’ say they fully satisfy all requirements necessary for the creation of a Municipality under the 1992 Constitution.

Speaking to Citi News, MP for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah said the action is aimed at improving on the decentralization programme and to ensure speedy development of the area adding that “Accra needs to be developed into a modern capital.”

“When you come to Okaikwei district, there are three constituencies here and the Act requires that economic viability must drive the government in creating the district. If you go to Okaikoi South for example the home of Dadeban road is made up of the top companies in this country namely, Fan milk, Ashfoam, Latex foam etc but if you look at the infrastructure within that area it is very bad.”

The MP further argued that “in the Okaikwei Central constituency which includes Abeka-Lapaz, Fadama, the economic activities there is very good and Okaikwei North has a lot of industries, ABC, Star and what have you. So in terms of numbers we satisfy and in terms of economic activities, we do qualify to be made a municipality.”

Mr Boamah revealed that he would petition the president and the Ministry of Local Government to have  the issue addressed.

Make Osu a municipality
