The chief and people of Dupare in the Wa East district in the Upper West region last Saturday commenced a three year project to construct a girls Senior High School in the community.
The project, estimated at GH₵2,880,000 is part of measures initiated by the community to improve education of girls in the area.
It is also to halt the migration of girls from Dupare and its surrounding villages to southern Ghana in search for menial jobs.
[contextly_sidebar id=”Ux5C6doUYwdFnip0bJWROWImQaPsRLgk”]Naa Mahama Naahuu , the chief of Dupare in a speech read for him at a ground breaking ceremony to start a 3- storey administration block for the school, said the community will contribute financially and also provide labor for the successful completion of the project.
”This project is at the heart of the Dupare community and so we are prepared to contribute financially by levying all adult members of the community and also to provide communal labor”He noted.
Naa Mahama said parents in the area are becoming increasingly worried about the rates at which girls drop out of school after their Basic Education Certificate Exams (BECE).
He decried that though Dupare and its surrounding communities surrounding communities form a greater population of the Wa East district, the area has no senior high school, making it difficult for pupils especially girls to access secondary education.
” This area contribute significantly significantly to the entire development of our district but we cant boast of any SHS here. Girls who go to the cities to school end up as head porters and we can’t continue to watch helplessly for this to continue,” the chief lamented.
Nurideen Ajansumah, spokesperson for the chief, said since the establishment of a primary school in the community in 1987, less than 30 girls have been able to proceed to the SHS level.
He thanked “Bola Ray foundation” for agreeing to sponsor some building project in the school.
Issahaku Nuhu Putiaha, the Wa municipal chief executive, who represented the Upper West regional minister extoled the community their initiative. He revealed that government has awarded a 2-storey ICT and library project to be constructed in the school at a cost GH₵720000.
