The lives of thousands of persons living with HIV/AIDS could be in danger due to the shortage of antiretroviral drugs, the Ghana Aids Commission has said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ZSUIgGtfRVD2FMdkUBU8iW8pHwg9lePH”]The Commission currently needs $7 million  by close of Saturday to secure drugs for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

The Accra Director General of the Commission, Dr. Angela El-Adas revealed that the Commission has been faced with the challenge due to the  loss of about “44 billion dollars in commodities” to the recent Central Medical Stores fire outbreak.

The Central Medical stores caught fire a month ago, burning most of the products in the stores.

Speaking at the roundtable discussion on Friday in Accra, the Commission said an appreciable quantity of anti-retroviral drugs were among the numerous items destroyed by the Central Medical Stores fire.

Reports indicate that over GH¢237 million worth of items were destroyed at the stores.

Challenges with health care delivery

The Commission has for sometime now been battling to provide healthcare for persons living with the disease.

A National Fund was earlier set up to support the treatment of people infected with the HIV and AIDS.
