Students of the Islamic Girls Senior High School in Suhum in the Eastern Region have been forced to study under trees after parts of their classrooms were destroyed by a storm.

The school’s storeroom and 13 other classrooms were destroyed by the storm that occurred on 13th December 3013.

Assistant Headmaster of the school, Ebenezer Tawia told Citi News they have still not received help since the incident and this, he said, was affecting teaching and learning in the school.

According to him, several people in authority including the Member of Parliament for the area, officials from the Ghana Education Service and the Education Ministry have visited the school to ascertain the extent of damage but help is yet to come.

“They all came here to see the disaster and said they were preparing to come to our aid, up till date there has been no help from anyone”. Mr Tawiah said, and added, “Our school is now a school under tree. The headmistress is doing everything possible to ensure that the students stay in school”.

The Islamic Senior High School has a population of one thousand students, with only two classrooms left for use after the disaster. Mr Tawiah said all the other classrooms are “traps that we should not be using but we have no option”.
