An international human rights agency, Amnesty International, has raised concerns over what it said is an increase in the assault of civilians by some soldiers in Ghana.

[contextly_sidebar id=”sWRJ2e0SH1cg2x1MIBCpTcSaRZ8m5HUV”]According to Amnesty International, the action of these soldiers corresponds to an increase in mob justice in the country.

The agency made the revelation at the launch of the Amnesty International’s Annual Report on the state of the world’s human rights.

Speaking at the launch, the Director of Amnesty International Lawrence Amesu said the agency continues to receive a lot of reports on the assault of civilians by some soldiers and urged government to address the matter.

“I would like to take the opportunity while we launch this report to draw your attention to the gradual but disturbing social evil creeping back into Ghanaian society. This is mob action. Unfortunately some soldiers, who are expected to protect Ghanaians are also involved in taking such instant justice. And we have such more reports of soldiers beating up civilians,” he stated.

He made reference to a reported incident some weeks ago where four soldiers allegedly beat up a bus conductor to his death.

Lawerence Amesu urged government to “commit itself to implement a clear agenda for human rights particularly the protection of the vulnerable.”
