Open data is data that should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they monopoly here and now wish.

On 20th February, the day was dedicated to open data and many data enthusiasts gathered around the world to hack ideas on the topic.

The common activities for the day were discussions and hacks on how to make data more accessible, open and develop relevant information for consumption.

The Mobile Web Foundation Ghana and The Code for Ghana team spent the day on this important subject. Three teams were formed to innovate with data available from GODI.

Developers and data fellows ended the day with very interesting ideas to make information from the datasets very consumer friendly.

Some of the ideas and prototypes were interactive games that tested the users’ knowledge of the state and statistics on education in specific regions,  a search engine for health facilities and a middleware to create a much more friendly consumable data, targeted at data analysts, developers and journalists from the datasets available from GODI.

The project had initial funding from NITA and soon will be getting more from the World Bank to improve and accelerate the program.

GODI which stands for Ghana Open Data Initiative started in 2012 by NITA to make Government of Ghana data available to the public for re use.

Hopefully WB will be more vigilant in the implementation of the project. To make the GODI project relevant, solution providers and consumers must be involved.

Data when readily available can help with many developmental and innovative projects. Once information from datasets are available, people become educated and informed to take important decisions.
