[contextly_sidebar id=”LmB9Lf9hi2VW7gR1cwiiKN4Bgm2zb4MH”]The Osu Traditional Council is appealing to the government to create a new municipality in the area.

The traditional council recommended that the town be made independent from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The council believes the creation of a new municipaility will speed up development there to the benefit of their people.

Speaking to Citi News, the chief of Osu who is also President of the traditional council, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI  insisted that the new municipality when created, will be a vehicle for transformation in the area, hence their appeal.

“Considering our boundaries, how vast it is, we have over 2 to 5 million people living within the catchment area so we qualify, population wise for it.People assume Osu is developed but we being the eyes and ears of the people know that we lack so many things. There are a lot of social intervention programmes that could take care of hard stricken poverty,” he stated.

This is not the first time the Chief of the town has requested for a new municipality.

The chief earlier made similar calls , saying “we have lacked in development for far too long,” he said.

He earlier cited La, Teshie and Nungua as traditional areas with municipal assemblies, saying: “what is good for the goose is also good for the gander.”

He said Osu had what it takes to become a municipality and pleaded with the Local government ministry to begin the demarcation of Osu traditional boundaries to enable it to carve out the area from the jurisdiction of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
