Chris Forsythe, the FIFA agent at the centre of the match fixing scandal that rocked the Ghana Football Association during the 2014 World Cup has been handed a 3 year ban while his accomplice Obed Nketiah has been warned by the Ethics Committee of the GFA.

[contextly_sidebar id=”IdgD07fyIopoYVzSYLX8Lw1b9C7l2VxE”]The decision was given on Thursday after months of investigation by the GFA.

The FA was told by FIFA in 2014 to handle the case locally but they could refer to FIFA in case they failed to find a resolution to the matter.

In the ruling of the Ethics Committee, it was determined that: “Mr. Forsythe had been unethical and asked for his FIFA player license to be revoked forthwith. He is also been banned from organizing or involving himself in any football matches at any level for three years and has also been disqualified from holding any executive position in any club for three years.”

Obed Nketia has been severely reprimanded to serve as a deterrent to people who may be tempted to drift along the path of ethical depravity.

He has further been banned from holding any executive position on the Ghana Football Association or any of its sub-committees for two years.”

Background

An undercover investigation carried out by British newspaper, The Telegraph and Channel 4 uncovered videos of Chris Forsythe and Obed Nketiah, the bank roller of Ghana Premier league side Berekum Chelsea bragging about their ability to employ corrupt officials who could rig friendly games played by the Black Stars.

Chris Forsythe went on to say that match fixing was a common phenomenon in in modern day football and that he was capable of even fixing matches between Ghana and British teams.

“The referees can change the matches every time .Even in England it does happen he said,” he said.

Mr Forsythe and Mr Nketiah also set up a meeting with the President of the GFA Kwesi Nyantakyi in Miami during the Black Stars pre 2014 World Cup friendlies to discuss sponsoring the teams games.

Following a report of the incident to the Police by the Ghana Football Association the two men were apprehended by the Police and later granted bail.

Information from the Ghana Football Association was used in this report.
