Despite receiving the clearance to embark on their planned demonstration on Wednesday, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the Police tried to secure a court injunction to stop the protest.
[contextly_sidebar id=”pdCRe3hXJRD7EJnY6ZhhWgqJzdDEKzQP”]The General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong revealed this at a press conference on Tuesday but fell short of explaining why the Police tried to stop them.
“The Police went behind us to get a court injunction [to restrain us] but the court threw them out,” he said.
Mr. Agyepong added that “I have in my possession court documents relating to the injunction application.”
The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno on Monday disclosed that his outfit and the NPP had had disagreements over the proposed routes for the protest.
The NPP last week announced plans to stage a demonstration on Wednesday February 18, over what they described as the worsening power and economic crisis.
At Tuesday’s press conference, the General Secretary said they are ready for the February 18 demonstration to show government how they are unhappy with the current energy and power situation in the country.
The NPP’s scribe also disclosed that the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) have confirmed their participation in the exercise.
Present at the conference was Kofi Adda, former Energy Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Nana Akomea and John Boadu.
Meanwhile, there are indications that leading members of the NPP including the party’s 2016 Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo Addo and his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will join the demonstration according to Kwabena Agyepong.
