The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has charged President Mahama to suspend the appointment of Baba Kamara as national security advisor until the status of the bribery case held against him is determined.
The senior advisor to the president was appointed the new National Security Advisor, even though he still has the Mabey and Johnson 2009 scandal hanging on his neck.
[contextly_sidebar id=”GkVUb41mnxJSn8XfLmMZno5buyfVm63P”]The Guardian in the UK in 2009 published on its front page that foreign politicians and Ghanaian officials were named as having received corrupt payments from a British firm, Mabey and Johnson as the company admitted it had systematically paid bribes around the world to win contracts.
The bridge-building firm, Mabey and Johnson, is the first major British company to be convicted of foreign bribery. Many of its contracts were financially supported by the British taxpayer.
Baba Kamara was allegedly used as a conduit to unlawfully channel some money to top government officials under the erst while President Rawlings’ administration.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News the executive director of the anti-graft group blamed the President for not doing enough scrutiny before making his appointment.
“If they investigate and find out that he was guilty then what happens to the appointment and that’s why I am saying that at least the President should have made ground works to make sure that any appointee is cleared of any impending case before he makes that appointment,” he said.
He therefore advised “the President to hold on the appointment and formally write to CHRAJ to find out the status of the case as of now.”
“If CHRAJ says that it has lost interest in the matter and therefore can go ahead with the appointment then it goes ahead with appointment.”
