Persons with disability will not struggle to cross the pedestrian footbridge at Tetteh Quarshie from March, 2015 according to the Department of Urban Roads.
The Director for Urban Roads, Alhaji Abass Awolu said on the Citi Breakfast Show that even though there are currently no signs the footbridge is disability friendly, there are arrangements to make the changes by next month.
He also revealed that “government will get everything[on the project] completed before the end of March.”
The ash steeled footbridge which is being constructed at the Tetteh Quarshie bus stop is about 85 percent complete.
Mr. Awolu revealed that about three similar bridges are currently under construction in different parts of the Accra.
“We are looking at three bridges in Accra. Two are around Tetteh Quarshie …and the third is around the Mallam area.”
Statistics from the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service indicated that as many as 1,129 pedestrians were knocked down in Accra alone in 2012.
The figure from Accra alone is the highest, out of the 2,797 recorded nationwide in 2012.
It is expected that the Tetteh Quarshie footbridge will provide safe and sustainable crossing of roads, especially for women and children.
