As the March 3 District Assembly Level Elections draw near, the Northern Region National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), with sponsorship from European Union, has intensified public education on the elections.
At one of the programmes, the Commission organised a focus group discussion for Chiefs, Women Groups, People With Disabilities (PWDs), the Youth, and others groups in Yendi, on the factors militating against the mass participation in the elections and how to improve the situation.
di[contextly_sidebar id=”pf3tF1P3wcWr7w6B2MwSZDTTeN1VStX5″]The Northern Regional Director of NCCE, Alhaji Abdul-Razak Saani, said the NCCE was organizing the programme with the European Union in all the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Region.
He announced that they had so far covered 11 local assemblies, including, Saboba, Gushegu, Bole, Damongo, Sawla in the Region.
He said their objective was to whip up the interest of the people in the area to massively vote peacefully in the election.
They were also working to ensure that women and PWDs keenly contested the elections.
Alhaji Alhassan Iddi Gonji, the Yendi Municipal NCCE Director, urged all eligible voters, especially, women, and PWDs, to cast their votes for competent and responsible people to run the affairs of the Yendi Municipality and Mion District.
He advised them to ensure that the area had a peacefully election.
Mr. John Doe, Programme Officer of NCCE, Accra, said a research carried out by the NCCE indicated that three percent of Ghana’s population were PWDs, while more than 50 per cent of the population were women.
Mr. Doe said Ghana could not have any meaningful local governance and democracy without the active participation of women and PWDs.
He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to support them during the Assembly elections.
