The Police have sent a stern warning to the group calling itself Concerned Ghanaians that they will not “countenance” any attempts to flout the directive to reschedule their planned demonstration on March 6, 2015.
The group had earlier notified the Police of their intention to demonstrate against the erratic power supply but the law enforcement body denied their request citing the independence day celebrations as a main reason for their decision.
[contextly_sidebar id=”KcPg73MpY9MkMEGd6uKbPQe7Grys9sVG”]The Police stated that they will be unable to provide the needed security to protect protesters and appealed to the group to re-schedule their demonstration.
But the members of the group served notice they will disregard the notice and advice of the police and have announced their decision to go ahead with the demonstration.
However in a strongly worded statement, signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, ASP Effia Tenge, it said the Police will use every “legitimate means ” to stop the group.
“The Accra Regional Police Command will not hesitate to use legitimate means to restrain the group called Concerned Ghanaians on their wilful decision to embark on a planned demonstration slated for 6th March, 2015 the independence day celebration,” she said.
While acknowledging the prior notice given to them by the group, ASP Effia Tenge said “As such any attempt by any group or persons to demonstrate on the said date which is likely to jeopardise the grand celebration of the 58th anniversary of the country will not be countenanced.”
It further stated that “Taking the strong decision of the group into consideration, the Police is likely to use whatever powers accorded it by section (6) of the Public Order Act , to prohibit the leadership of the group to revert the decision.”
“The Police requested that the date be postponed due to the considerable role played by the police across the country during this important assignment,” the statement noted.
