Youth groups in the Upper West Region have commended government and Parliament for passing the Youth Employment Agency Bill (YEA).

Mumeen Suleman, Upper West Regional Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA) said “the youth in the region see the passage of the bill as a critical step towards addressing youth unemployment in the country.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”mXHlNUYsHzc5nsoaxoz6rhN0iIMjhh5b”]Parliament last Tuesday, passed the new Youth Employment Agency Bill as part of efforts to restructure the buckled Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Agency Programme.

Though the bill has received some criticisms from some individuals and organizations and is yet to receive presidential accent, Mumeen Suleman believes it has what it takes to halt the growing unemployment rates that remained a major challenge for both past and present governments.

“For us as youth development workers, we think the passage of the bill is laudable. We are commending our MPs for taking such a good decision. Indeed we are confident that it can turn things around as far as youth unemployment is concerned”. Mumeen Suleman said.

He however wants government to stand by the assurance given by the minister employment and labor relations that employees under the YEA will receive “realistic” wages.

Such a move according to the regional director “will go a long way to empower the youth to take their rightful positions in society”

Mr. Mumeen also used the opportunity to appeal to young people in the country not to rely solely on government for their development needs.”young persons shouldn’t always expect everything to come from central government. As much as we can, let’s cultivate the habit of do things on our own” he stressed.

Meanwhile some young people who spoke to citi news are appealing to the president not to delay in signing the bill into law. They said any delay will worsen the plight of the youth in the country.
