The Minority in Parliament is demanding full disclosure of the amount of money spent in airlifting Ghanaian fans to Equatorial Guinea to support the Black Stars in the just ended African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
[contextly_sidebar id=”wpCon9Ywp1TJ9iOXOrH5LJvHiXZwc4sq”]Though Sports Minister, Mahama Ayariga on Wednesday gave details of the amount spent on the Black Stars team, the Minority said he was silent on the budget for the supporters.
Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul on the floor of Parliament insisted that Ghanaians must know the cost adding that “the minimum that the government budgeted for the Black Stars was GH¢18.5 million, we need to really know the actual budget.”
“How much was used in lifting the supporters from here to Equatorial Guinea, how many supporters went, how many times did they go, the feeding everything, we need to know this,” he further queried.
He said when the Minister appeared in Parliament, “he limited it [his presentation] to just the players,” describing it as “very misleading.”
“The point I’m trying to make is that the minister still has a lot of information to give this House concerning the cost. GH¢18.5 is far below the figure, we all know that and he agrees with me,” Dominic Nitiwul added.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga has urged Ghanaians to stop asking what he says is “useless questions” about the AFCON budget.
“You are using valuable time to discuss useless matters, please, I think that this is very regrettable and it will dampen the spirit of the boys who were trying to kill themselves only to come back and even the food that they ate, they will hear on radio that their minister is [answering questions] about the food that they ate. It’s sad,” he said.
