Black Stars midfielder, Andre Ayew has apologized to Ghanaians for the failure of the senior national team to win the just ended African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
[contextly_sidebar id=”bzRhGfCnKSgQ0qreRP3MaqG0FmO4ICyt”]Ayew in Tweet on Thursday said: “I’ve had a few days to reflect on my emotions and I want to sincerely apologize to Ghanaians for not bringing the cup home.”
He indicated that although the team did their best during the tournament, “unfortunately, our best wasn’t good enough this time.”
But their failure to win the cup to break the 33-year AFCON trophy drought, he observed, “has only made us stronger and hungrier to bring the cup home Ishaallah!”
According to him, he is consoled by the fact that he was able to win the goal king of the tournament for Ghanaians “although we [Black Stars] were not able to put a smile in your hearts with a winning trophy for our country.”
This, he said gives him the assurance that all his hard work was not in vain.
Andre Ayew therefore expressed his profound appreciation to Ghanaians for their support and for “believing in me because I couldn’t have done it without you. God bless you all.”
Ghana’s hope of being crowned the African football champions was dashed after Ivory Coast beat the Black Stars 9-8 on penalties in the tournament’s final in Equatorial Guinea.
