Interior Minister Mark Woyongo has served notice that the government will deal drastically with any Prison officer found culpable in the Kumasi Central Prisons jail break.

[contextly_sidebar id=”VYzCpAZa7mRdfXBMEYEELNl8zr6tJ5tG”]According to the Minister, he is reliably informed that the fatal fire and attempted jail break incident was a well-orchestrated break-out plan.

Last week, a fire outbreak at the Kumasi Central Prisons in the Ashanti Region caused the death of an inmate, while with five jailers sustained varying degree of injuries.

The inmate who lost his life was reported to have allegedly attempted to snatch a weapon from a Police Officer who was trying to control the situation but was shot by another Policeman on site.

Some inmates believed to have been the ring leaders for the attempted jailbreak have been transferred to various prisons.

However, at a media briefing in Kumasi, the Interior Minister bemoaned the destruction the fire and the preceding chaos had caused to the facility.

He described as unfortunate that while government together with the Prison administration were assiduously working to provide the necessary relief and training for prisoners, some suspected Prison officers were conniving with inmates to attempt to break jail.

“This is a case where we were working hard to get equipment for the prisons so that when they come out, they would have learnt a trade but if you go into the prison now, you will see massive destruction,” he complained.

Mr. Woyongo disclosed that he has personally had an interaction with the Prison officers “and I told them that anyone of them who is involved in this thing, we will not have mercy for any Prison officer.”

He insisted that government will bring to book the perpetrators, stressing that “to be honest with you, I am not happy with the massive destruction done to the prison.”
