The President John Mahama in an apparent reply to critics who accuse his government of wanton borrowing says his government will continue to borrow in so far as development is concerned.
According to the President there is no truth in the assertion that his government has not been prudent in its borrowing.
The President made the statement when he commissioned a 7.9 million Euro water treatment facility at Kyebi which will serve surrounding communities such as Anyinam, Kwabeng etc.
According to the President there is ample evidence that all developed countries reached such heights by engaging in prudent borrowing.
“There are some who claim Ghana is borrowing too much and that it is increasing the nation’s debt, but I dare say if you borrow and use it prudently you are on the right course and that is what is important,” the President stated.
According to the President his “government does not borrow money to use on drinks and food, we use the money to provide potable water and electricity to various communities.”
President Mahama told the gathering that once the nation’s development priorities are concerned government, ‘’will continue to borrow and use it on projects that are beneficial to all”.
It is recalled that in recent times some critics of the NDC administration have warned against the administration’s penchant for borrowing citing that as the cause for the increasing national debt.
However speaking at Kyebi in the Eastern Region to end his two day tour of the Region, President Mahama denied such claims and said government will continue to borrow from the international community and other sources for development.
He further refuted claims that Ghana is not progressing, “don’t be deceived to think that the nation is not moving forward in its development agenda, we are moving forward and we will continue to move in the right direction,” President Mahama opined.
He thus appealed to the Chiefs to help in the effort of discouraging illegal mining so water bodies in the catchment area could be preserved.
President Mahama further revealed government plans of rolling out the second phase of flushing out illegal miners across the country.
