Facebook updates celebrity-loving Mentions app

Facebook rolled out an update on Thursday to its celebrity-focused Mentions app, making it easier for high-profile users to interact with fans.

In addition to sharing on Facebook, Mentions users can now add other people — including bandmates, teammates or colleagues — and hashtags to the “Mentions Feed,” a feed of posts in the app, as well as directly share updates to Twitter and Instagram.

Facebook introduced the Mentions app last July as a way for public figures, such as actors, musicians and athletes, to keep track of what fans are saying about them on the social network. For instance, if a Facebook user tags Jennifer Lopez in a status update, Lopez will be notified about it in the Mentions app, so she can potentially respond.

That’s just what some celebrities, including Mariah Carey, Samuel L. Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg, are doing, according to Facebook, which reports more than 2 billion interactions between users and fans each week.

Mentions is only available to users with verified Facebook pages, a process that requires approval from the social network. So for now, starstruck Facebook users will just have to hope their favorite celeb has the app, and keeps close tabs.
