President John Dramani Mahama has advised Ghanaians to conserve energy, a way he said will help mitigate Ghana’s energy crisis.
The President made the advice after inspecting facilities at the Akosombo dam, on Thursday.
“I will like to appeal to the citizens of Ghana to conserve power. If you are leaving the house or leaving the office, switch off your air condition, don’t leave lights on, switch off your television set if you are not watching it so that we can conserve more power and be able to build up the resources that we have,” he said.
President Mahama expressed government’s commitment in finding a lasting solution to the energy crisis that has bedeviled the country.
He said he has directed the power ministry to fast track the procurement more power badges to salvage the situation.
“I’ve given a direction to the ministry of power to bring in emergency power of about 750 megawatts this year. And so if we bring additional emergency thermal power then probably we can shut down another unit of Akosombo so that we have the lake level restored and we all have to pray that almighty God sends down the rain in 2015 so that the lake can be restored to itself,” he added.
Many Ghanaian have complained about the erratic power supply in the country.
President Mahama who visited the Sunon Asogli Power Plant, the Cenit Thermal Power Plant and the VRA Thermal Plant all located at Kpone near Tema said he is hopeful the power crisis will be a thing of the past.
