The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly will meet with the central market traders before the reconstruction of the market begins.
The Public Relations officer at the KMA, Mr. Godwin Okuma Nyame denied that media reports that the Assembly will evacuate traders at the central market next month,
[contextly_sidebar id=”PZgzgDcOTcjUGCW7f43j7zER5dbmiEQz”]This follows an interview granted to a local radio station by the city major, Kojo Bonsu that reconstruction of the 90-year Kumasi central market will begin in March, 2015.
Traders have expressed fears of being displaced when the reconstruction of the facility begins.
However, in an interview with Citi News the PRO, Mr. Nyame said “when we say that the exercise will begin somewhere next month, we don’t mean the evacuation of the traders from the central market and also putting up the physical structures immediately….we are saying that by the end of next month, we should see certain actions so far as the reconstruction is concerned but not to evacuate the traders from there.”
Mr. Okuma Nyame noted that the assembly is yet to set up a proper database of the traders so as to get the traders back to the facility after the reconstruction which will be three times more than the structures already in place adding that “we are yet to engage them and get a proper database that will help us bring them back to their current location when the project is completed.”
However, he assured that the assembly will get a temporary place at Kejetia from where they will trade,”
