Sick KKD fails to appear in court

The committal hearing of the rape case against ace broadcaster, Kwesi Kyei Darkwa (KKD) has been adjourned to Febraury 12, 2015.

This was after lawyers for  KKD told the Kaneshie Circuit Court today that their client was ill and had been rushed to the Korle Bu hospital on Wednesday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”AVYarmqcY2qE86icm53NJELCxYjZKIsk”]According to the lead counsel, Anthony Folson, KKD was given a bed to rest by the doctors and will subsequently present to the court, medical report by the hospital.

The Director of Public  Prosecution at the Attorney Generals Department, Cynthia Lamptey expressed her unhappiness about the turn of events adding that she would have asked the court for a bench warrant to arrest KKD.

The KKD alleged rape saga: The story so far

December 27, 2014: Renowned broadcaster Kwasi Kyei Darkwah is arrested by the police at the African Regent Hotel and is held at the Airport Police Station in Accra.

December 28, 2014: The police processed KKD for court but they were unable to present their case to the court due to their late arrival.

December 29, 2014: A member of KKD’s family told Citi News that they suspect foul play in the circumstances leading to his arrest.

December 30, 2014: KKD is charged with rape and makes his first appearance in court where he is denied bail by a Kaneshie Magistrate court.

December 31, 2014: Lawyers for KKD filed another bail application at the Human Rights court in Accra which they describe as a ‘higher court’ following the denial of their original application.

December 31, 2014: In their application for bail at the Human Rights Court, the lawyers say that security footage at the hotel from the night of the incident captured the complainant and their client “romantically kissing” adding that the two were locked in a similar embrace after the alleged incident.

December 31, 2014: The fashion icon, in a Facebook post, assured his sympathizers that he is “alive and well” and warns his detractors not to speak of his demise yet.

January 8, 2015: KKD is admitted at the Police Hospital in Accra after he was seen limping badly during his case for bail which was adjourned by the Magistrate Court.

January 13, 2015: The 19-year old alleged rape victim wrote to the court stating that she was no longer interested in the case. KKD later in the day apologized for what he described as the “trauma” he has caused the 19-year-old woman he allegedly raped.

January 14, 2015: The victims letter to withdraw the case was forwarded to the Attorney General’s department.

January 15, 2015: KKD was granted bail on humanitarian and health grounds.

January 22, 2015: The Attorney General’s Department announced that they will pursue the case despite the victim’s request for the court to drop the case.

January 29, 2015: An Accra magistrate court adjourned the rape case to February 5, 2015. The adjournment was at the request of lawyers for KKD who said prosecution served them with the bill of indictment late.
