Inmates feared dead in Kumasi prison fire

An unconfirmed number of Kumasi Central inmates are feared dead after clashing with security operatives who prevented them from breaking jail.

[contextly_sidebar id=”QpRZR3ghCXFYBpJB3kOfy0nl0UR5gRmC”]The inmates clashed with the Police, in an evacuation exercise during the fire outbreak in parts of the prison on Wednesday evening.

Some of them hurled bricks at other dangerous objects and the security operatives, injuring about four Police officers in the process.

Some inmates at the prisons reportedly tried to take adavantage of the incident and escape custody but they failed.

Speaking to Citi News, the Ashanti Regional Minster, Samuel Sarpong said the team of Police and Military personnel were called in to restore order.

He said though prisoners tried to “take advantage of the situation”, “the Police were very swift and they have been able to contain the situation”

He also stated that the inmates have been returned to their cells.

Ina related development, the Public Relations Officer of the prison, ASP James Annan, has dimissed reports that the fire was set by inmates.

He stated that the fire started after a part of the building was struck by lightning during a storm.

Meanwhile three Prison officers at the Kumasi Central Prison are receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching after inmate hit them with unknown objects last night.
