The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denied accusations that the party is sponsoring some candidates to contest the upcoming district assembly elections.
[contextly_sidebar id=”qCNrYzjgOngPXPVhkvvZQRubOsPZwjch”]The National Coordinator of Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), Albert Kofi Arhin on Monday told Citi News, his outfit has documented evidence of the involvement of the two major parties (NDC and NPP) in campaigning in some five districts ahead of the elections.
This is in contravention to the electoral laws of Ghana which bars political parties from directly contesting and participating in the conduct of district assembly elections.
But speaking to Citi News, the Director of Communications of the NPP, Nana Akomea denied any involvement of the NPP in the process.
He insisted that the NPP is a party which obeys laws and will “never break the electoral laws regarding District Assembly elections.”
Nana Akomea maintained that the “NPP will never frontier or support anybody who is contesting District Assembly elections.”
He however urged CODEO to provide them with any evidence of local party people using the NPP symbols, the NPP paraphernalia to campaign ahead of the elections for the necessary action to be taken.
“We will be happy if they bring it to our notice so we can take action,” he said, adding that, the NPP “will not condone illegality in the conduct of District Assembly elections.”
“The District Assembly elections are supposed to be non-partisan; political parties are not supposed to be involved so we cannot be involved in any form,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has set Tuesday, March 3, 2015 to hold the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections.
Preparations are underway for the elections while the various aspirants are campaigning ahead of the exercise.
