A Deputy Minister of Education, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa has inaugurated a project to distribute android ‘tablets’ to distance education students of the University of Ghana.
According to Mr Ablakwa the project is aimed at easing the pressure on the university for space in lecture halls and other facilities.
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) project which cost $37.5 million is a loan agreement signed between University of Ghana and the Chinese Company, Unisplendour Software Company of Tsinghua University, Beijing.
The Deputy Minister observed that the country’s education had become “a pyramid with 5.4 million pupils at the basic education level, 840,000 students in secondary schools with few spaces available in the universities, polytechnics and colleges,” hence the need to decentralize the system.
Mr Ablakwa said only modern technology could offer the enabling environment to increase the number of students for university education and still guarantee quality.
“We are convinced we can improve quality and work with higher numbers,” he added.
Mr Ablakwa further urged the students to put the facility to good use.
