The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has served notice to Ghanaians to brace themselves for an intensified power rationing.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LaUvsB20ln1ym2VR9AM0s43q54pYYznW”]According to GRIDCo, there is a 500 megawatt shortfall in power generation which represents almost a third of the 2,000 megawatts needed for onward distribution by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA) in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday explained that the situation has intensified due to the low levels of water in the Akosombo, Bui and Kpong dams.

He also mentioned that the Asogli power plant is down to half capacity which is equivalent to about 90 megawatts, Cenite; which is another thermal plant in Tema is also down meaning, the nation has lost 100 megawatts of power and TICO in Takoradi is also down with one machine but came on last week and that was also another 100 megawatts.

Meanwhile, stakeholders are collaborating with ECG to draw up a new schedule for the ongoing power rationing.

This is because the intensity of the load shedding has left some areas in Ghana experiencing power outages continuously between two to three days.

Power consumers have since been complaining and demanding a new schedule to enable them plan their daily activities

GRIDCo’s Manager of the System Control Centre, Frank Otchere, is quoted by the Daily Graphic as saying, “the new timetable will probably tighten the schedule a little more than the current one.”
