An Egyptian doctor Raslan Fadl has been fined, and jailed for two years for carrying out female genital mutilation (FGM).
The doctor, who denied carrying out FGM on 13-year-old Suhair al-Bataa was according to the BBC, convicted in a landmark appeal of carrying out the act.
The decision has been described by an international activist group as a “monumental victory”.
The victim, who lived in a small farming community on the outskirts of the Nile Delta city of Mansoura, reportedly died in 2013 .
Government statistics have revealed that over 90% of Eyptian women aged under 50 have undergone the procedure.
The number of Egyptian girls who died following FGM is unclear, as deaths are either recorded as haemorrhages or allergic reactions to penicillin.
The BBC said Fadl claimed that Suhair al-Bataa’s death had been caused by a penicillin allergy.
