The National Taskforce on Compulsory Insurance have arrested owners of four commercial building companies in Tema for non-compliance to the Insurance Act.
The companies include Pee Tay Building Company, Ampenebea House, Everpure Company Limited and Cardinal Petroleum.
The Insurance Act mandates owners of all private commercial buildings both completed and under construction to take insurance policy to protect third parties against collapse of buildings.
[contextly_sidebar id=”UKjMSOurSToVsjqRaWvoD42HypbI0XHi”]The Taskforce made up of officials from National Insurance Commission, Ghana National Fire Service and Ghana Police Service visited other commercial buildings including A-Z Petroleum Company Limited, Link Afrique Company Limited and Gellog Limited.
Mr Joseph Bentum, Chairman of the Taskforce, said none of the companies visited complied with the compulsory insurance and fire certificates.
He explained that those arrested would be given three- day ultimatum to comply with the insurance Act at the National Insurance Commission or be processed for court.
Mr Bentum noted that the exercise was to sensitise the public on the Insurance Act and the need for compliance.
He said the Act also mandates the owners of private commercial buildings both completed and uncompleted to display a copy of their insurance certificates in their premises.
Mr Bentum urged all commercial property owners to comply with the law to ensure safety of their workers.
He said adherence to the law offers continuity to commercial entities by reducing the negative impact on their businesses.
“It is the responsibility of all to ensure that people have in place the required insurance policies to ensure that adequate compensation is made available for claimants,” he added.
