The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is dedicating every Friday to inspect high rise and other buildings in the Metropolis.
According to an official from the Assembly, the inspection has been ongoing since the beginning of the year.
The Assembly has also served notice it will demolish what it describes as unsafe buildings at Achimota, a suburb of Accra.
This follows the recent collapse of an uncompleted six-storey hotel building at Nii Boi town about a fortnight ago which claimed one life and injured another.
The collapse of the Melcom shopping centre in Achimota in 2012 claimed 14 lives. The location of the buildings and the quality of building materials used were blamed for the collapse of the two buildings.
Both the AMA and government promised policy change after the collapse of the Melcom shopping centre but have failed to release the report on the collapse.
The Assembly says the project which was supposed to begin on Tuesday will be conducted with support from the security agencies.
In a related development, the AMA has demolished unauthorized containers and stores in Dansoman in Accra.
A resident of the area, Jemima Andoh in an interview with Citi News narrated that the demolishing according to AMA officials was to ease congestion on the roads to safeguard the lives of pedestrians.
“In the morning, some of the shops didn’t open for business and some of the store owners didn’t come to the shop so I when I asked, they said it’s because of the demolishing so those with the containers near the road had their shops demolished,” she said.
