A group calling itself, Brigade of Young Social Democrats (BOYSD) has accused OccupyGhana for betraying Ghanaians by failing to pressurize transport operators to reduce transport fares.
[contextly_sidebar id=”iUnUHnKk9TDjEjO6aH8DveRvmXVdbEcQ”]The group argued that the deafening silence of OccupyGhana on high transport fares despite the 10 percent reduction in the prices of petroleum products “confirms the skepticism people have about their [OccupyGhana] intentions and further expose the agenda of members of this group.”
OccupyGhana, the Minority, labour, industry players and other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) demanded a reduction in the prices of petroleum products following the drastic fall in the price of crude oil on the world market.
After weeks of resistance, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) made a 10 percent reduction.
Consequently, transport operators were given a directive to reduce fares by 5 percent but not all operators have adhered to this directive.
Although OccupyGhana demanded a further reduction, their demands have not been met.
A statement issued and signed by the leadership of the group including the National Coordinator, Anthony Selorm K Morrison said OccupyGhana in their demand for fuel price reduction created the impression that it was acting on behalf of Ghanaians.
But according to him, Ghanaians are “disappointed that OccupyGhana has deliberately failed to put the same pressure which its leaders unleashed on the NPA and government, on private transport owners to reduce transport fares.”
“This is insensitive and further betrays the little trust of ordinary Ghanaians in OccupyGhana,” the statement added.
The group insisted that everything points to the fact that the agenda of OccupyGhana “is political and does not in any way include fighting for ordinary Ghanaians.”
They claimed that OccupyGhana is aware that “a reduction in transport fares will not inure to the benefit of their political pay masters, hence their loud silence.”
“We said it and we are saying it again, OccupyGhana is a baby of the opposition NPP and they speak and act only to please their leaders and to enhance their quest for power. It is therefore not surprising that they have failed to speak about the decision of private transport owners not to reduce transport fares.
