The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations has threatened sanctions against any employer who fails to effectively implement the latest increase in the daily minimum wage.

[contextly_sidebar id=”eEXVnA1XQwZgEeWeRbJIzi1c9zlz1zsb”]This comes after the National Tripartite Committee agreed to increase the minimum wage from 6 cedis to 7 cedis effective January 1.

The Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA) has already hinted it will struggle to pay the new rate because most businesses in the country are not financial sound.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu has insisted that no employers must pay below the sanctioned minimum wage of 7 cedis.

“Let it be strongly conveyed that any employer who honours this directive in breach will suffer the consequences in accordance with the laws of Ghana,” he warned.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Trades Unions Congress (TUC), Kofi Asamoah says labour will work with other local unions to demand their due.

“All employers and all those who engage labour whose wages are below the national daily minimum wage should comply… we believe that government as the manger of the economy should not fail in its responsibility with its agents and departments that it doesn’t become only written on paper,” Mr. Asamoah noted.
