The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu has reiterated the importance of the new daily minimum wage explaining that it was pegged at GHc7 to arrest “the continuous rise in inflation.”

The National Tripartite Committee after several deliberations agreed that the National Daily Minimum wage should be increased by 16.7% effective January 1.
Following the announcement, the Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA) said some of its members would struggle to pay the new amount.
According to the Association, some businesses in the country are facing serious financial and economic challenges and may therefore struggle to pay the amount.
But, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, said the GEA must abide by the decision taken saying “my understanding is that both parties appreciated what it meant committing to that particular agreement.”
He said government is doing its best to “improve the [country’s] macroeconomic state through the management of the wage bill as we have done and then we can all see a very strong and improved better performing economy.”
He said government is putting measures in place to end the energy crisis saying that “the private sector for instance needs to be assured of reliable and sustainable source of electricity which is a critical ingredient for the sustenance of their business.”
