An Accra Human Rights court has granted popular broadcaster, Kwesi Kyei Darkwa (KKD) bail.

He was granted bail on humanitarian grounds, citing his health as one of the reasons.

KKD who has been charged with rape has denied it arguing he had “consensual sex” with the alleged victim.

He and his lawyers further resorted to the Human rights courts to seek for bail after the Magistrate court denied him same.

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old girl who accused KKD of rape has withdrawn the charges.

The KKD alleged rape saga: How the story unfolded

December 27, 2014: Renowned broadcaster Kwasi Kyei Darkwah is arrested by the police at the African Regent Hotel and is held at the Airport Police Station in Accra.

December 28, 2014: The police processed KKD for court but they were unable to present their case to the court due to their late arrival.

December 30, 2014: KKD is charged with rape and makes his first appearance in court where he is denied bail by a Kaneshi Magistrate court.

December 31, 2014: Lawyers for KKD filed another bail application at the Human Rights court in Accra which they describe as a ‘higher court’ following the denial of their original application.

December 31, 2014: In their application for bail at the Human Rights Court, the lawyers say that security footage at the hotel from the night of the incident captured the complainant and their client “romantically kissing” adding that the two were locked in a similar embrace after the alleged incident.

December 31, 2014: The fashion icon, in a Facebook post, assured his sympathizers that he is “alive and well” and warns his detractors not to speak of his demise yet.

January 8, 2015: KKD is admitted at the Police Hospital in Accra after he was seen limping badly during his case for bail which was adjourned by the Magistrate Court.

January 13, 2015: The 19-year old alleged rape victim wrote to the court stating that she was no longer interested in the case. KKD later in the day apologized for what he described as the “trauma” he has caused the 19-year-old woman he allegedly raped.

January 14, 2015: The victims letter to withdraw the case was forwarded to the Attorney General’s department.
